Stratford, Texas, native Roy Lee ‘Sammy’ Malone was a 5-10 guard for the Buffs’ basketball team from 1946-50. Malone earned all-Border Conference honors in 1948-49 and 1949-50.
As a freshman in 1946-47, he helped the Buffaloes’ frosh team to win the Amarillo AAU tournament and finish second at the Dallas AAU tourney (behind SMU’s varsity squad). He was the J.W. Kleinschmidt Award recipient at the 1950 WT All-Sports banquet as Most Outstanding Basketball Player.
During his three-year varsity career, he helped the Buffaloes to a record of 46-31. During his senior year of 1949-50, WT beat Texas Tech three times. Trailing Tech, 27-24, Malone hit a long shot that propelled WT to a 10-1 run en route to a 47-43 win in what was the final game to be played in WT’s Burton Gym.
