What is NIL?
NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. It refers to a student-athlete’s right to earn compensation by using their personal brand in commercial activities. Examples include endorsement deals, social media promotions, autograph signings, sports camps, or selling merchandise. NIL does not affect a student-athlete’s scholarship or eligibility as long as activities follow state law, NCAA rules, and West Texas A&M policies.
What Does NIL Do?
- Empowers student-athletes to build and profit from their personal brand.
- Creates opportunities to engage with businesses, community groups, and fans.
- Requires responsibility in contracts, taxes, conflicts of interest, and compliance.
- Protects fair play by preventing NIL use as recruiting inducements or pay-for-play.
