Anderson had an incredible three-year career as a defensive back for the Buffs where he led the Buffs to a 21-9 record under head coach Joe Kerbel. He still holds the school record for most inceptions in a career with 18 tied with Steve Hateruis.

Following his time in Canyon, he was drafted in the fifth round in the 1971 NFL Draft by Pittsburgh Steelers where he appeared in 21 games recording four interceptions during his two seasons in the Steel City. He also played for the New England Patriots during the 1973 season where he appeared in 13 games with 11 starts with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
