Benton put together two standout seasons on the gridiron for the Buffs from 1994-95 as the Mesa, Arizona native ranks seventh in program history in total offense (5,831) and total passing yards (5,618). He holds the WT single-game record for most pass attempts (69) and passing touchdowns (8) while holding the highest mark for yards of total offense per game in a season (411.0, 1994).

The Mesa, Arizona native finished fifth in the Harlon Hill voting during his junior campaign in 1994, earning All-American honors from Dr. C.M. Frank (2nd Team) and Football Gazette (3rd Team). Benton led the Lone Star Conference in passing yards during his senior season, throwing for 2,077 yards as the Buffs went 14-8 during his two seasons in Maroon & White. He also played baseball for the Buffs as a senior in 1995.
