Hall of Champions
Patterson was a three-year starter at outside linebacker and a three-year letterwinner for the Buffaloes. He was a member of the 1950 Border Conference championship team and a member of the 1951 Sun Bowl championship team which defeated Cincinnati 14-13 on Jan. 1, 1951, in El Paso, Texas. He earned second team all-Border Conference honors.
In 1952, Patterson was recruited by the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League. He, however, was ordered to report to the U.S. Naval Reserve at the same time, so he was unable to play professional football.
Patterson has supported WT, both athletically and otherwise, by serving two terms as Director of WT Alumni Association and Phoenix Club, Member of the Old Main Society and President's Circle and WTAMU Foundation Board of Directors. He also established the Don and Dorothy Patterson Leadership Scholarship, as well as the Don and Dorothy Patterson President's Honor Scholarship.
