14779Dr. Long began at WT in 1992, as the provost and vice president for academic affairs and was named President two years later.  During his tenure as President, Long saw implementation of new academic programs addressing regional needs in mechanical engineering, dryland agriculture, equine industries, environmental science, integrated pest management, emergency management systems and communication disorders.  Moreover, the University received approval in 2003 to establish the first doctoral program, a Ph.D. in agriculture.
 
He also spearheaded physical improvements to the campus, most notably the construction of the Event Center, which opened in 2002, and the $30 million Fine Arts Complex.  Renovations of residence halls, the library, dining hall and the Alumni Banquet Facility, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, the Agriculture and Natural Science Building and the Virgil Henson Activities Center all came on his watch.
 
Dr. Long received his bachelor's degree from Sul Ross State in 1965, a master's from New Mexico State in 1967 and a doctorate from Texas A&M in 1977.  He was the ninth President in WTAMU history and the third-longest tenured.
