Willis was a four-year letterman for the football team and he also lettered four years in track. He was hired as the youngest head Men/Women track coach in Division I at age 26 and was a teacher in the physical education department at WT. He was a three-time Missouri Valley Conference champion in 60m indoor hurdles, 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

Under Willis' guidance as head coach, WT hosted the first national championship for the men's pentathlon in 1984. He was a 1976 Olympic trials qualifier and set six indoor records held at WT. He developed the first indoor pentathlon and hosted the US women's national indoor championship at WT.Â
Currently he is a managing partner of Renaissance Capital Group, LLC, and former President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Dr. Wendler recently named Willis to the Executive Advisory Committee for the WT 125. He was named to Who's Who of Black Dallas in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 as it is a national publication. Willis has a doctorate degree in divinity from Trinity International Seminary.Â
Willis has a daughter Twanna McKee who lives in Amarillo and a granddaughter Alyssa.Â
