Matthews graduated from West Texas State in 1977 with a Bachelor's of Science after serving as a student athletic trainer for multiple sports. While at WTSU, he earned his Texas Athletic Training License, which included no less than 1,800 hours of documented care to student-athletes. 
 
Following graduation, he was the head athletic trainer for Angelo State for 20 years (1977-97) while serving as a part-time athletic trainer for the Houston Oilers for nine years. He was inducted into the Texas State Athletic Trainers' Association Hall of Honor and ASU Hall of Honor in 2018 while also earning the West Texas A&M College of Nursing and Health Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017.
