Charley Sanders played football for the Buffs from 1955-57 and the tough-running fullback led the Buffaloes under Coach Frank Kimbrough to a 19-9-1 record, including an 8-2 record in 1956 and the Tangerine Bowl victory over Mississippi Southern, 20-13.

During that year he was selected first team Associated Press All-American and in his senior year he was a Williamson National Football Rating System All-American.

The former Gruver Greyhound rushed for 1,818 yards and scored twenty touchdowns during his three-year career. He scored twelve TD's in 1956 and led the Border Conference in that category. In 1957 he ran for 938 yards (second in the conference). Sanders was named first team All-Border Conference in both of those seasons.

He served in the U.S. Army following college and worked in the construction business upon his return stateside.
