Thompson was named 2002 Lone Star Conference Linebacker of the Year as he had 104 tackles in 2002.  He had a career 358 tackles with 40 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
 
He was a first team Associated Press Little All-America selection in 2002 and was drafted in the second round by the Cleveland Browns in 2003.  He played for Cleveland from 2003-2007 and then for the Houston Texas from 2008-2009.
 
Professionally, he played in 98 games with 30 starts recording 11.5 sacks, 161 tackles, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
