In 1986 the Buffs began the non-conference season 1-4, but then they ripped off five consecutive LSC wins and needed only a road win at Abilene Christian to clinch the outright championship.

After Compton caught a 25-yard TD pass from Tod Mayfield with 12:29 left in the first quarter to give WT a 7-0 lead, ACU scored 28 unanswered points and led 28-7 after three quarters.

The Buffs scored 25 fourth-quarter points, including two five-yard touchdown runs by Compton - the last with 2:04 to play. Compton ran six times for 70 yards in the final quarter and caught one pass for 46 yards. For the game he had 16 carries for 132 yards and five catches for 94 yards.

The Hale Center, Texas, native led the Buffs in 1986 with 783 yards rushing, and was second in pass receptions with 43 and scoring with 80 points, and third in receiving yards with 447.
