WT Performance Chart Meet Results: (Mt. SAC Relays / Bryan Clay / Ross Black Open) HOBBS, N.M. – The No. 7 women's and No. 10 men's track & field teams of West Texas A&M had a big weekend between four meets as they combined to set 22 new or improved provisional times and/or marks and broke six school records. WT sent 16 athletes to compete on the West Coast between meets at Azusa Pacific, Mt. SAC, and Long Beach State while additional athletes competed at New Mexico Junior College.
Wrapping up the action at Long Beach on Saturday was
Mireia Guarner who broke a new school record in the women's 5000m race. She ran a time of 16:54.01, earning a provisional in the event.
"I'm very proud of what we accomplished this weekend," stated head coach
Darren Flowers. "We had many lifetime bests and school record and overall it was a great experience for our student-athletes to see this level of competition."
For the men, seven new or improved provisional marks/times were recorded at the Ross Black Open in Hobbs. Senior
Jerell Banks started things off on the track by setting a provisional in the 200m. He placed sixth overall with a time of 21.36. Three provisionals were set in hurdles events afterwards. Senior
Arnau Erta finished first in the 110H with a time of 14.08 and was followed by freshman
Trevor Greenfield third at 14.55. Then in the 400mH, Greenfield followed with a 52.98 performance, finishing first as well.
The field for the Buffs was highlighted by junior
Zach Weatherly who broke his own school record in the hammer throw competition, placing first with an improved provisional mark of 56.48m. He would go on to win both the discus and shot put competitions as well. Freshman
Duke Kicinski also improved his provisional in discus as he threw for 51.40m. Finally, freshman
Brandon Leitch hit provisional in javelin with a distance of 59.59m.
Starting off on the track for the women were juniors
Shanice Cameron and
Libby Strickland in the 100m. They placed second and fifth, respectively, with provisional times of 11.74 and 11.98. Strickland then finished third in the 200m, running a provisional 24.20, followed by junior
Bri Leeper with a time of 24.28. Junior
Alba Casanovas then topped the 400mH field with a provisional time of 1:01.04.
Finishing off the day for the Lady Buffs was
Bailey Trimmell. She placed second in the hammer throw event by throwing 47.45m, setting a new school record and huge PR.
"We competed very well this weekend and had some great performances throughout the meet," noted Associate Head Coach
Matt Stewart on the Ross Black Open. "We are coming home with some personal bests and qualifying marks and we are looking forward to competing at our home track this upcoming weekend."
Friday Recap The Lady Buff trio of
Mireia Guarner,
Sharon Kwarula, and
Emma Love highlighted the action for the West Texas A&M No. 7 women's and No. 10 men's track & field teams on Friday as they each re-broke school records in their respective events. WT athletes also recorded seven new or improved provisional times as the teams competed in three separate meets on the California coast.
"We had some stellar performances on Friday," noted Flowers. "I feel like we competed well for the most part. We come out here to run personal bests and qualify for NCAA's and I feel like we took a step in the right direction yesterday"
Starting off the day were athletes competing at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Guarner got things started with her provisional and school record performance in the women's 1500m race, placing 28
th with a time of 4:29.65. Kwarula also set her mark in Walnut with her improved school record time of 59.17 in the 400m hurdles, finishing third overall. She was an All-American in the event in 2014 and now ranks second in the country currently this season. Finally, junior
Michael Schaefer hit provisional in the men's 800m event, placing 24
th with a time of 1:52.31.
The Buffs and Lady Buffs had three big performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational as well, an event hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif. For the men, freshman
Brandon Rivera kicked things off with a time of 1:52.18 in the 800m race, placing 10
th and earning a provisional qualifier. Senior
Baptiste Moreu would then set a huge PR and provisional time in the 1500m event, placing 27
th with a time of 3:47.82. For the women, senior
Michaela Johnson earned a provisional in the 3000m steeple chase, setting a new PR with a time of 11:11.40.
WT only entered athletes in the 10,000m races on Friday at the Beach Invite, hosted by Long Beach State University. Love highlighted the night as she broke her own school record and ran a provisional time of 36:49.20. As for California, the Buffs and Lady Buffs only returned to the Beach Invite on Saturday. The rest of the team that did not make the trip competed today in the Ross Black Open, hosted by New Mexico Junior College.
THE MEETS: WT is featuring 16 athletes in races across all three meets in California this weekend. The historic Mt. SAC Relays is being hosted as usual by Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. The Buffs and Lady Buffs also are running again this year in the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State University at Cerritos College's facility in Norwalk, Calif. Finally, athletes ran in the Bryan Clay Invitational, hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif.
The Ross Black Open will occur today (Saturday) only, April 18. Between 40-50 athletes from WT's squad have made the trip to Hobbs, N.M. in a meet that is being held at NMJC's new track & field facility.
