PITTSBURG, Kan. – The West Texas A&M men's and women's track and field program continued to break barriers and records at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. WT combined for seven All-Americans in four events, one school record, freshman record and Lone Star Conference record. The men's team finished 16
th to improve on their place from last season's championships while the women's team finished 19
th.
"I feel that we made progress to becoming a national recognized program this weekend," head coach
Darren Flowers said. "I felt that we went out and competed during the second day. Libby (Strickland) started the day off strong in the pentathlon. You could see that the other athletes thrived off that energy and accomplishment."
Daniel Gyasi earned All-American honors twice on the final day after finishing sixth in the open 400 meters and anchoring the 4x400 relay to a fifth place finish.

Steven Cooper and
Alex Schaffer all earned All-American honors as part of the relay team.
Libby Strickland picked up her second All-American award of the championships after finishing sixth in the pentathlon. The sister duo of
Norma Cunigan and
Holly Cunigan finished sixth and seventh in the shot put.
On the men's side, Gyasi finished sixth in the 400 meters finishing in a time of 47.37. He becomes the first Buff to earn All-American honors in the 400 meters after running the third-fastest time in school history.
The quartet of Piniau, Cooper, Schaffer and Gyasi won the second heat and fifth overall with a time of 3:11.25. That is not only the fastest time in school history but breaks their existing LSC record by more than two seconds.
Piniau had a strong first leg putting the Buffs in first place before passing the baton to Cooper. He kept a slim lead throughout his leg before handing off to Gyasi on the anchor leg. He opened up a gap on the rest of the field before making a late surge to hold them off in the final straight away.
Strickland became the first athlete in school history to earn 10 All-American honors in a career as She finished sixth in the pentathlon. She earned All-American honors for the third consecutive year. Her 3,810 points is the second-most in school history.
She opened the competition running 9.12 in the 60 meter hurdles to pick up 885 points and followed that up in the high jump by clearing 5-5.75 (1.67m). Entering the shot put, she was in the inside looking in for points but threw a personal-best mark of 35-0.50 to changer her fortune. She continued that momentum in the long jump with a mark of 16-4.75 (5.65m). She entered the 800 meters in a tie for third. She was one of a handful of athletes that pushed the pace early to make it an honest effort before finishing in 2:22.53.
Norma Cunigan took sixth in the women's shot put with a mark of 48-8.25 (14.84m). She broke her own freshman record with that mark and now ranks No. 3 in school history .
Holly Cunigan was seventh in the same event earning her first All-American indoors with a mark of 47-1.75 (14.37m). That now ranks as the No. 5 best mark in school history.
Malika Ouedraogo finished 13
th in the triple jump with a mark of 39-1 (11.91m).
UP NEXT: The Buffs and Lady Buffs will take a break from competition before opening their outdoor campaign on Thursday, March 24, at the Texas Tech Open.
Day OneThe West Texas A&M men's track & field program had a successful first day at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships with two All-Americans while advancing one runner to the final.
Libby Strickland earned All-American honors for the Lady Buffs via her third place finish in the high jump. The men's distance medley relay of
Jamie Taylor-Caldwell,
Steven Cooper,
Alexander Korn and
Geoffrey Kipchumba finished second behind American International.
"You can't ask for a better start to the championships for us," Head coach
Darren Flowers said. "I knew that the DMR was fit and ready to roll. Libby performed really well against a solid field and I am happy that she was able to finish so high. We just need to keep that momentum going into tomorrow and hopefully we can have similar results."
Strickland became the first athlete in school history to earn All-American honors four consecutive years in the same event in school history. She finished third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.72 meters.
The DMR finished runner-ups for the only the second time in school history (
Malika Ouedraogo, triple jump, 2014) in a time of 9:49.24. Taylor-Caldwell ran a strong first leg to put the Buffs in good position heading into the 400 meters. Cooper dodged traffic for the first 15 meters before making up ground before handing off to Korn for the penultimate leg. Korn passed a multitude to hand the stick off to Kipchumba near the front. Kipchumba kept pace with the leaders before making a move with America International's going into the final turn.
Daniel Gyasi advanced to the final in the 400 meters as the top qualifier after winning his heat in a time of 47.19. He was in second place heading into the final 200 meters but strategically moved into first with less than 50 meters to go.
Shanice Cameron finished fourth in the final heat of the 200 meters running a time of 24.90.
SCHEDULE: The women's pentathlon will start at 9:15 a.m. (CT) while the women's shot put is scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
