CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M had a strong showing as it opened the 2022 outdoor season at the WT Spring Break Classic in Canyon highlighted by
Bassem Hemeida record-breaking performance in the 400-meter hurdles. In total, WT picked up 17 victories and 14 provisional marks.
BROKEN RECORDS
Hemeida ran a program record 49.99 in the 400m hurdles to surpass Rod Guillory's time of 50.84 set back in 1985 as he became the first Buff to ever finish under 50. The freshman now has the fastest time in the nation as he ran the 20
th-fastest time in NCAA DII history.
Two other records would fall in Canyon as the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams broke the school records. The quartet of
Sifiso Miya,
Jeremiah Lauzon,
Desmond Aryee and
Benjamin Azamati shattered the men's record running 39.57 to finish first while
Jordanae' Scott,
Leah Belfield,
Alana Wilson, and
DeOndra Green ran a program and facility record 44.74.
FOR THE LADY'S
Sophomore
Brooke Urban led off the day with her first-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 5-6.0 (1.68m).
Elliot Harrison jumped a personal-best 18-9.25 (5.72m) to win the long jump in a field of 17.
Zada Swoopes picked up a pair of victories in the shot put and discus for the Lady Buffs. The senior threw 56-3.75 (17.16m) in the shot put before returning to take first in the discus at 176-11.0 (53.93m). She now leads the nation each event.
The Lady Buffs finished 1-2-3 in the 800-meter run led by
Eleonora Curtabbi with a time of 2:11.62 followed by
Raquel Chavez and
Grace Dwyer.
Laiten Greeson won the 100m hurdles with a personal-best 14.42 while
Jayna Lueders was the only athlete to clear 9-10.0 (3.00m) in the pole vault.
Freshman Hekla Sif Magnusdottir led the way in the triple jump with a mark of 39-0.25 (11.89m) to pick up her first outdoor victory. Harrison would grab her second victory when she ran 1:04.74 in the 400m hurdles.
Wilson would return to the track to win the 100m with a time of 11.82 before she picked up her second individual victory in the 200 with the nation's leading 23.94.
Greeson along with
Alexis McGill, Makayla Thomas, and
Cheyann Shadden finished second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:08.20.
ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Freshman
Luke Holcombe picked up his first outdoor victory, throwing 53-7.5 (16.34m) in the discus.
Hamdi Alamin added another victory for the Buffs with a clearance of 6-11.75 (2.13m) followed by
Seniru Amarasinghe in second at 6-6.75 (2.00m).
Hunter Warminski finished second in the long jump at 23-0.0 (7.01m) while
Traise Cain ran 15.35 in the 110m hurdles to finish second.
Jon Tucker finished second in the discus after throwing 44-9.75 (13.66m).
On the track, the Buffs went 1-2-3 in the 400-meter led by
Ohdel James with a provisional time of 46.87 followed by
Quinton Sansing (47.20) and
Butare Rugenerwa (48.12).
Innocent Murwanashyaka led the way for the Buffs in the 1,500-meter run as he crossed the line in 3:58.73 to finish first followed by
Calvin Allen (4:06.43) in third and
Gustavo Posada in fifth (4:09.65).
Two Buffs finished in the Top 5 of the pole vault with
Dylan Gilliam finishing second followed by
Traise Cain in third each recording a clearance of 13-11.25 (4.25m).
Ray Dixon Finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 182-2.0 (55.53m).
