Randy Denham Retires from Coaching After 48 Years

CANYON, TEXAS – West Texas A&M Track & Field's Randy Denham has announced his retirement from coaching following 15 years mentoring the throwers for the Buffs and Lady Buffs, Denham's overall coaching career spanned 48 years.
 
"Coach Denham has been a cornerstone of our track and field program's success over the past 15 years. His throwers have consistently elevated our team, producing LSC Champions, NCAA Champions and All-Americans along the way" said Director of Track & Field Matt Stewart "Randy's impact on this program runs deep, and while he will be greatly missed, we couldn't be more grateful for everything he's given to our athletes and our program. We wish him all the best in a well-earned retirement."
 
Denham recently completed his 15th season on the West Texas A&M staff, coaching 10 individual National Champions and 29 All-Americans during his time in Canyon. Denham's throwers have been crucial to the success of the program, winning four women's NCAA Division II National Championships highlighted by an outdoor crown last month in Emporia, Kansas.
 
He has been a part of 35 total Lone Star Conference Team Championships while coaching 36 LSC Individual Champions. Zada Swoopes was named the USTFCCCA National Women's Field Athlete of the Year in 2021 and 2022 as Denham earned USTFCCCA South Central Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year accolades in 2022.
 
Before WT, Denham coached shot and discus at Tascosa High School in Amarillo for over 30 years. During his time there, he coached over 40 regional qualifiers and over 20 state qualifiers. Fifteen of those athletes went on to throw in college, most notably Nick Jones who participated in the 2012 Olympic Trials.
 
The Spearman, Texas native is a 1979 graduate of West Texas State and he resides in Amarillo with his wife Vivian. They have four children and ten grandchildren.
