Bonifacic and Conde-Turpin Win National Championships on Friday

CANYON, TEXAS – West Texas A&M's Fran Bonifacic and Esther Conde-Turpin added another honor to their impressive resumes on Friday in Emporia, Kansas as the pair claimed National Championships in the multis at the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
 
Conde-Turpin won her third National Championship in a Lady Buff uniform on Friday afternoon, registering the third highest point total in NCAA Division II outdoor history and setting a new meet record in the women's heptathlon (6,100) that included 2,507 points over the final three events capped off by a time of 2:12.88 in the 800m.
 
Leidy Cuesta claimed All-American honors in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.33 meter on her second attempt to finish eighth overall. Conde-Turpin showed her versatility as the senior qualified for the finals in the 100m hurdles with a mark of 13.62 which is eighth best in WT history.
 
Abigail Abugire set a new facility record with a time of 2:05.57 in the women's 800m, registering the fastest prelim time while running the eighth best mark in Lady Buff outdoor history to qualify for the finals. Sierra Cornell will join Abugire in Saturday's final with a time of 2:08.52.
 
Eliette Chaput claimed a ninth-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase with a mark of 10:34.84. The 4x400m relay squad of Sandra Appiah, Emiliia Tangara, Asana Hamidu and Blessing Akintoye registered a season-best time of 3:34.62 for the fastest prelim mark that also ranks third in school history to qualify for the finals.
 
Bonifacic proved himself as one of the top all-around athletes in the nation, winning the decathlon in thrilling fashion with 7,499 points for the fourth highest total in WT history. The Croatian product picked up a victory in the final event, the 1,500m with a time of 4:34.87 to outlast Leo Chauchard of Pitt State by seven points.
 
James Dadzie punched his ticket to the men's 200m finals with a mark of 21.00. Emil Meggle registered a time of 1:48.95 in the 800m prelims, the eighth fastest mark in school history, to qualify for Saturday's final.
