SAN MARCOS, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's and women's track & field teams capped off a successful three-day opening weekend for the outdoor season between two meets on Saturday as they combined for 12 provisional qualifiers, one automatic qualifier and three broken school records. Leading the way in the strong finish was junior Lorenzo Johnson who earned WT's first automatic qualifier this outdoor season, punching his ticket to the NCAA National Championship later in May.

The Buffs and Lady Buffs competed in both the Texas Relays and Texas State's Bobcat Invitational this weekend; however, action for WT was only featured at the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday. Johnson did the job in the men's 110m hurdles where he won the event with a 13.81 time, breaking a school record in the event as well. Senior Arnau Erta, an All-American in the event in 2014, also earned a provisional qualifier by placing third with a time of 14.18, setting a new PR in the race.

Also hitting provisional for the Buffs was senior Zach Weatherly who placed seventh overall in shot put with a 16.22m throw. Senior Kemarki Absalom did so as well in the field with a second place finish in long jump (7.32m). Additional top-eight finishes for the men included Brandon Rivera (second, 800m), Michael Schaefer (eighth, 800m), and the 4x100m relay team that placed second (Absalom, Tommy Curry, Jerell Banks, & Johnson). The 4x400m team then finished fourth overall with a time of 3:15.98.

For the women in San Marcos on Saturday, senior Sharon Kwarula led the way as she also won her event, topping the 100m hurdles field with a provisional 13.67 time. Also hitting provisional on the track was the 4x100m relay team of Jasmine Walker, Bri Leeper, Libby Strickland, & Shanice Cameron. They finished third with a time of 46.63. The women's 4x400m relay team would then win the event with a time of 3:49.18. That squad included Alba Casanovas, Sharon Kwarula, Shanice Cameron, and Libby Strickland.

Then on the field, sophomore Holly Cunigan would wrap things up with a provisional in shot put. She tied for sixth in the event by throwing for 13.92m.

FRIDAY RECAP (3-27-15)

Sophomore Malika Ouedraogo and junior Zach Weatherly highlighted Friday's action for the West Texas A&M women's and men's track & field teams as they broke their own school records, adding to five provisional marks set by the Buffs and Lady Buffs at the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invitational.

Ouedraogo edged her previous mark from last season with a 12.49m distance in the women's triple jump in Austin on Friday. That would place her second overall in the competition with a provisional mark. Also putting together a strong performance at the Texas Relays for the Lady Buffs was senior Sharon Kwarula who ran a provisional 14.00 in the 100m hurdles, placing 16th in the competition.

Two additional provisionals were set by the Buffs in Austin on Friday. Starting off was junior Lorenzo Johnson who did so in the 110m hurdles, placing 10th overall with a time of 14.12. Soon after, the men's 4x100m team ran to a provisional time of 41.07, finishing 16th. That team consisted of Kemarki Absalom, Tommy Curry, Johnson, and Banks.

The Buffs were led on Friday in San Marcos by Weatherly who broke his own school record with a 52.36m throw in the men's hammer throw competition. That placed him 16th overall. After hitting provisional in his first showing in the 400m hurdles on Friday, junior Damien Bourguin upped his time in the event with a 52.76 time at the Bobcat Invitational on Friday, placing third in the competition. Finally, junior Zach Daniel grabbed WT's lone event win on the weekend so far as he topped the men's 5000m field with a time of 15:16.41.

THURSDAY RECAP (3-26-15)

WT started off the 2015 outdoor campaign with four provisional qualifiers on a short day in the Lone Star state on Thursday. The Buffs and Lady Buffs opened up a three-day competition series on Thursday between two meets: the Texas Relays and the Bobcat Invitational.

Starting off the day were three different events at the Texas Relays. The prestigious meet is now in its 88th running. Senior Baptiste Moreu started things off with a provisional time in the men's 1500m in Austin, Texas. He ran 3:50.78, good for fourth place. Also grabbing a provisional time for the Buffs in the meet was junior Damien Bourguin who placed 28th in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line at 52.88. On the women's side of the 400mH, junior Alba Casanovas finished 26th with a time of 1:01.42, also a provisional time.

The only event outside the multi to be held at the Bobcat Invitational on Thursday was the discus. In that event, Amarillo native, junior Zach Weatherly threw for a provisional distance of 51.95m, good for eighth place overall.

The Buffs and Lady Buffs will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, April 3-4, as they compete in the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas. The meet will be held at the Fuller Track & Field Complex on TTU's campus. Check back with www.GoBuffsGo.com later next week for more information on the meet as it becomes available.
