Stewart Named LSC Outdoor Coach of the Year, Azamati Earns Specialty Awards

RICHARDSON, Texas – West Texas A&M head coach Matt Stewart was named the 2022 Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track & Field Men's and Women's Coach of the Year while Benjamin Azamati received the Cap Shelton Award announced by the league offices on Thursday.  In total, 27 WT student-athletes earned all-conference honors.
 
Azamati was named the Outstanding Male Track Athlete for the second consecutive year, and fourth overall as he also claimed two indoor honors.  The sophomore won two individual events at the conference meet with the 100 and 200-meter dash.  He set a meet record in the preliminaries of the 100 after running 9.96 before going on to run a wind-aided 9.86 to take the crown.
 
The Akim Oda, Ghana product also earned First Team All-Conference honors along with Butare Rugenerwa, Sifiso Miya, Innocent Murwanashyaka, Noah Bundrock, Quinton Sansing, Bassem Hemeida, William Frobe, Harry Louradour, Malick Diop and Chance Martelli. Peniel Richard and Ray Dixon picked up second team recognition with Jahmaal Wilson earning third team honors. 
 
For the Lady Buffs, Zada Swoopes, Taylor Nelloms, DeOndra Green, Leah Belfield, Eleonora Curtabbi, Elliot Harrison, Grace Dwyer, Alana Wilson, Jordanae' Scott earned First Team All-Conference honors.  Betty Bajika and Jordan Brown both earned second team honors while Miriam Zanovello and Brooke Urban were named to the third team. 
 
Miriam Zanovello was named the LSC Women's Track & Field Academic Athlete of the Year for the first time in her career and was joined by Leah Belfield on the All-Academic team while Briggs Wittlake and Desmond Aryee were named to the men's academic squad. 

WT will host a Last Chance meet on Sunday, May 15, at the WTAMU Track & Field Complex before setting out to Allendale, Mich. to compete in the NCAA DII National Championships on May 26-28.
