LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 5 Buffs of West Texas A&M won their second consecutive Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship and the program's fourth overall on Saturday in Lubbock. WT won six events with a program-record 206 points to defeat Texas A&M-Commerce by 86 points.

Records fell on Saturday afternoon as
Benjamin Azamati continues to be a rewrite the books on a national scale. Azamati broke the all-time meet record in the 60m with the second-fastest time in NCAA Division II history running 6.55 to take the gold. He returned to the track to add to his trophy case as the sophomore also ran the second-fastest 200m time in DII history in 20.57. Azamati is now the nation's leader in both events.
Beside Azamati, the Buffs had four other athletes compete in the finals of the 60m with
Tyrin Lewis finishing fourth with a personal-best 6.77 followed by Desmon Aryee (5
th, 6.80),
Sifiso Miya (7
th, 6.85) and
Jalen Purcell (8
th, 7.02).
Jeremiah Lauzon finished third in the 200m in 21.14 with
William Frobe finishing sixth in 21.78.
Butare Rugenerwa won the mile for the second consecutive year running a season-best 4:16.93. The junior ran 28.83 in the final lap to move ahead of DBU's Noah Metzger to collect 10 points for the Buffs.
Tyrin Lewis was crowned the 60-meter hurdle champion after crossing the line in 7.78, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville's Johnathon Harper by .3 seconds.
Christian Marshall finished fourth in the event running 8.16.
Three Buffs finished in the Top 10 of the 5,000-meter run led by Innocent Murwahashyaka who picked up a victory running 8:38.04. The junior was pushed by teammates Noah Bundock (4
th, 8:44.33),
Harry Louradour (5
th, 8:48.55) and
Jay Hall (8
th, 8:51.30).
Abdelrahim Mahgoub was the top finisher for WT in the 800m placing fifth in 1:55.66.
Gerard Bryant picked up a victory in the high jump with a clearance of 6-6.0 (1.98) to finish second in the heptathlon with 5,156 points while
Traise Cain finished 10
th with 3,960 points.
Two Buffs received medalist honors in the triple jump as
Sifiso Miya finished second with a mark of 49-0.25 (14.94m) followed closely behind by
Peniel Richard in third at 48-11.75 (14.93m).
Luke Holcombe finished second in the shot put with a toss of 52-9.5 (16.09m) on his fifth attempt.
WT picked up 14 points in the 400m with
Quinton Sansing recording a runner-up finish in 48.04 and
Ohdel James finishing third in 48.15. With the team title already locked up, the quartet of
Jeremiah Lauzon,
Ohdel James,
Malick Diop and
Quinton Sansing won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:12.75.
Friday Recap
Ray Dixon led off scoring for the Buffs as he picked up eight points in the weight throw after breaking his previous school record with a mark of 59-11.0 (18.26m). The junior broke his record in the first attempt at 18.23m but threw even farther on his third throw to finish second in the event.
Gabe Imery finished third in the pole vault with a personal best clearance of 15-6.5 (4.74m) which is the fifth-highest clearance in program history, making him one of only two Buffs to clear 4.70m indoors.
Tyrin Lewis set a new meet record in the 60m hurdles as the Amarillo native crossed the line in 7.83 to automatically qualify for the finals.
Quinton Sansing ran a season-best 48.61 in the 400m to qualify for the finals along with teammate
Ohdel James who also ran a seasonal-best at 48.72.
Five Buffs qualified for the 60m finals led by
Benjamin Azamati's Lone Star Conference all-time meet record at 6.57. The sophomore's time automatically qualified him for the finals along with
Tyrin Lewis (6.76),
Jalen Purcell (6.77),
Desmond Aryee (6.80) and
Sifiso Miya (6.82).
The Buffs placed three in the Top 5 of the 5,000 led by
Innocent Murwanashyaka. The St. Paul, Minn. product finished second in 14:58.86 followed by
Harry Louradour in fourth (15:06.00) and
Jay Hall in fifth (15:09.00).

Brian Nganga each qualified for the men's 800m run.
Competing for just the second time this season, freshman
Hamdi Alamin broke the school high jump record with a clearance of 7-1.5 (2.17m) to finish second while
Sifiso Miya finished second in the long jump with the seventh-best mark in school history at 22-7.75 (6.90m).

Chance Martelli,
Brian Nganga and
Gustavo Posada finish fourth in the men's distance medley relay with a time of 10:28.63 to add 5 points to the Buffs team score.
