#20 Lady Buffs Host #17 Angelo State on Thursday Night at the FUBC

CANYON, Texas –
The #20 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M continue their homestand on Thursday night as they welcome the #17 Belles of Angelo State for a Lone Star Conference showdown starting at 5:30 p.m. CT at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
ANGELO STATE
Angelo State is guided by second year head coach Renae Shippy who was announced as the 11th head coach in program history back on April 24, 2017. She served the previous two seasons as ASU's top assistant. The Belles enter the weekend with an overall record of 18-2 with a 13-1 mark in Lone Star Conference play to sit atop of the league standings following an 82-51 road win over Texas Woman's last Saturday afternoon to run their win streak to eight games.
 
LSC Preseason Player of the year Marquita Daniels leads the way offensively for the Belles as the senior guard has gone 111-of-271 (41%) from the floor including 24-of-93 (25.8%) from behind the arc to average 15.4 points per game while De'Anira Moore averages 15.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest.
 
WT HEAD COACH KRISTEN MATTIO
Kristen Mattio is now in her fourth season as the head coach of the Lady Buffs, registering an overall record of 102-22 (.823) with three NCAA Tournament appearances including a spot in the Regional Finals each of the three seasons and a South Central Regional Championship in 2016-17. Mattio became the third head coach in program history to reach 100 victories while becoming the second fastest to the milestone in her 122nd career game back on February 2nd in Lawton.
 
WINNING TRADITION
The 2017-18 season marked the sixth-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT has won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 27 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.

WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (FEB. 12)
The Lady Buffs jumped a pair of spots to 20th in the newest edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top-25 announced on Tuesday afternoon by the association's offices in Lilburn, Georgia.
 
Drury picked up all 24 of the possible first place votes to sit atop of the poll with a unanimous total of 600 points followed by UC San Diego (562), Indiana, Pa. (523), Fort Hays State (515), University of the Sciences (472), Union (464), Northwest Nazarene (445), Virginia Union (426), Thomas Jefferson (415) and Alaska Anchorage (399) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by Angelo State (17th), Colorado Mesa (19th), West Texas A&M (20th) and Lubbock Christian (22nd).
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 213-31 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.3%. WT has averaged 1,066 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
BEST IN THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
The Lady Buffs have registered an overall record of 391-83 in Lone Star Conference action since joining the league prior to the 1986-87 campaign for a winning percentage of 82.9%. WT has won 16 LSC Regular Season Championships during that span including 14 Tournament Titles.
 
LADY BUFFS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Lady Buffs made their fifth straight and 24th overall appearance in the NCAA Division II Basketball Postseason in 2017-18 as they are 37-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the 37 wins ranking sixth-most all-time in NCAA Division II and ranks fourth-most among active DII institutions. WT has claimed seven Regional Championships with two appearances in the National Finals since the 1986-87 campaign.
 
In the last five NCAA tournament appearances for WT, the Lady Buffs are 15-5 during the stretch with three South Central Regional Championships and an appearance in the 2014 Division II National Title Game.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The defending Lone Star Conference Champion Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M have been picked as the favorite in the league's preseason poll announced on Wednesday, October 24th during the annual LSC Basketball Online Media Day. The preseason poll is voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives from throughout the league.
 
The Lady Buffs picked up 18 of the possible 31 first place votes for a total of 324 points followed by Angelo State with seven first place votes for a total of 307 points. Tarleton ranked third (four first place, 279) followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (two first place, 252), Eastern New Mexico (199), Cameron (177), Texas Woman's (154), MSU Texas (140), UT Permian Basin (98), Texas A&M-Kingsville (74) and Western New Mexico (42). Marquita Daniels of Angelo State picked up Preseason Player of the Year accolades.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The #22 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M had four players in double-figures on Saturday afternoon as they led by nine points after the first quarter and never looked back in a 93-57 Lone Star Conference win over the UT Permian Basin Falcons at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Tyesha Taylor who went a perfect 9-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-3 from the free throw line for 19 points followed by Lexy Hightower with 18, Braylyn Dollar grabbed a team-high six boards while Megan Gamble led all players with eight assists in the win.
 
Nyachristmas Puok led the way for the Falcons as she went 7-of-11 from the floor for 15 points, Juliette Akinwole grabbed six rebounds on the afternoon while Puok dished out four assists to go along with a block.
 
WT finished the game going 36-of-53 (67.9%) from the floor including 10-of-22 (45.5%) from behind the arc and 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe with 20 rebounds (four offensive, 16 defensive), 27 assists, 11 turnovers, two blocks and 11 steals.
 
The Falcons went 24-of-50 (48%) from the field in the game including 3-of-9 (33.3%) from deep and 6-of-8 (75%) from the free throw line with 24 rebounds (11 offensive, 13 defensive), 11 assists, 22 turnovers, three blocks and four steals in the loss.
