PORTALES, N.M. – Two first half goals from
Khadidra Debesette and
Rachel Herring were enough to secure victory for West Texas A&M women's soccer on Wednesday night. The Lady Buffs opened their Lone Star Conference campaign with a 2-1 victory over rival Eastern Mexico after an hour and half lightning delay. WT improves its record to 3-3-0 (1-0-0) after beating ENMU in Portales for the first time since 2012. The Lady Buffs are currently on a three match winning streak.
ENMU opened the scoring the in the 21
st minute when Melissa Carnero pounced on a loose ball in the box. But the Greyhounds lead was short lived as Herring scored her first goal of the season just six minutes later. The Lady Buffs took the lead on Debesette's second goal of the season in the 38
th minute. WT held a 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half forcing Karissa Stinson to make three saves.
Neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm in the second half as they combined for a total five shots. The game was delayed more than an hour with just under nine minute remaining due to a lightning delay.
The Lady Buffs defense held ENMU to four shots, three of those on goal, and only allowed one corner.
TURNING POINTKhadidra Debessette scored her second game winning goal in as many matches when she found the back of the net in the 38
th minute. Debesette juked past her defender before beating the keeper.

Karyn Forbes had a match-high six shots, one of those on goal.
