KINGSVILLE, Texas – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs remain first after day two of the Lone Star Conference Championships highlighted by a pair of victories from seniors
Zada Swoopes and
Grace Dwyer. WT leads with 88 points which is 15 points ahead of Angelo State.
Zada Swoopes won her second event of the weekend as the senior improved her provisional mark in the discus with a season-best 177-8.0 (54.16m). The senior became just the third Lady Buff to win the event with the fourth farthest throw in program history.
Taylor Mixon finished 10
th, throwing 133-8.0 (40.75m).
Grace Dwyer picked up another 10 points for the Lady Buffs as the senior won her first conference victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Lake Station, Ind., native moved up to first on the seventh lap before running 1:19.55 on the final loop to cross the line in 11:16.63.
Two Lady Buffs finished second in the high jump as
Brooke Urban and
Taylor Nelloms each cleared 5-7.25 (1.71m) followed by
Elliot Harrison in sixth at 5-1.0 (1.55m).
Raquel Chavez and
Eleonora Curtabbi won Heat 1 and Heat 3 to advance to the finals of the 800-meter finals. Chavez ran the fastest time in prelims at 2:16.26.
Jordan Brown and
Sherifatu Sheriff will run the finals of the 400.
Four Lady Buffs qualified for the 100m finals with
Leah Belfield,
DeOndra Green and
Alana Wilson going 1-2-3 in the prelims while
Jordanae' Scott ran the sixth fastest time.
Elliot Harrison finished third in the heptathlon with a career-best 4,473 points followed by
Laiten Greeson in fourth with 4,662. Harrison returned to run 1:05.61 to advance to the 400m hurdle finals.
The final day of competition gets underway at 12:30 p.m. with the pole vault while track events are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
