CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M freshman
Abigail Abugire claimed a victory in the 800m on Saturday afternoon during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Pueblo ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colorado as the Lady Buffs tied for fourth on the team leaderboard.
The Lady Buffs started off the afternoon in style as the 4x100m relay squad of
Peace Nwaelehia,
Leah Belfield,
Blessing Akintoye and
Deborah Acheampong ran a time of 44.48 to claim All-American honors with a fifth-place finish. The women's triple jump saw
Leidy Cuesta finish 12
th (12.46m) to claim Second Team All-American honors.
Sarah Koomson picked up All-American honors of her own in the women's 1,500m with a time of 4:32.61 to finish sixth. The 400m saw a pair of Lady Buffs finish in the top five with Akintoye running a 52.47 to finish 3
rd followed by Nwaelehia in 5
th (53.03).
Abugire continued her historic freshman campaign as the Ghana product broke her own school record in the 800m with a time of 2:02.93 to win the National Championship, she would also be a part of the All-American 4x400m relay squad alongside
Asana Hamidu, Nwaelehia and Akintoye with an eighth-place finish (3:35.22).
Leidy Cuesta claimed second team All-American honors in the women's triple jump as the Columbian product registered a mark of 12.46m on her second attempt to finish 12
th overall.
Naomi Addo picked up All-American accolades in the 5,000m with a time of 17:06.48 with a 10
th place finish.
