CANYON, Texas – Butare Rugenerwa and the 4x100-meter relay squad broke school records at the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi hosted by West Texas A&M. In total, the Buffs grabbed five victories at the two-day meet.
The quartet of
Desmond Aryee,
Jeremiah Lauzon,
Jalen Purcell and
Benjamin Azamati ran the nation's second fastest-time of 39.43 to win the 4x100-meter relay, breaking the school and facility record in process.
Butare Rugenerwa broke his own school and facility record in the 800m when the junior ran 1:48.09 in his section leading to a win for the Buffs.
Abdelrahim Mahgoub followed in second at 1:50.05 while
Brian Nganga ran 1:53.86 to take fifth.
Azamati would return to the track to match his NCAA Division II record in the 200-meter, running 20.13 to pick up a win for WT. Lauzon was the second finisher for WT at 20.57 followed by Purcell (20.97) and
Quinton Sansing (21.00).
WT went 2-3-5 in the 100 led by Purcell with a runner-up finish. The junior ran 10.23 followed by
Desmond Aryee running 10.33 and
Sifiso Miya, 10.42.
Freshman
Hamdi Alamin won the high jump matching his season best clearance of 2.13m.
Gerard Bryant finished third in the decathlon with a personal-best 6,649 points while
Traise Cain placed fifth with 5,498.
WT placed three in the Top 5 of the 1,500m with
Innocent Murwanashyaka finishing 3
rd at 3:57.59 followed by
Calvin Allen (4:00.99) in fourth and
Harry Louradour (4:06.03) in fifth.
Jahmaal Wilson ran the program's sixth-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.85 to finish second. Sansing led the way for the Buffs in the 400, running 47.77 to take fourth.
Ray Dixon finished third in the hammer throw with a mark of 54.31m followed by
Jon Tucker in sixth at 48.08.
Noah Bundrock picked up a victory on Friday night as he won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running a personal-best 9:18.52.
Three Buffs finished in the Top 10 of the men's long jump led by
Sifiso Miya. The freshman jumped 7.36m to finish second followed by
Hunter Warminski at 6.99 and
Peniel Richard at 6.82.
