GAME NOTES

CANYON, Texas –
 No. 12 West Texas A&M finish their season-long eight game road trip this weekend with doubleheaders at Midwestern State and Texas Woman's.
 
The Lady Buffs and Mustangs will play two on Friday, April 16, beginning at 4 p.m. at Mustang Park. They will then travel to Denton to face the Pioneers on Sunday, April 18, at Noon.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State enters the weekend at 12-22 overall and 5-15 in Lone Star Conference play. They have dropped seven straight dating back to March 7. 
 
The Mustangs are hitting .264 as a team with 50 doubles, three triples and 26 home runs for 103 runs batted in. MSU have also walked 75 times with 164 strikeouts for an on-base percentage of .332. They are a perfect 10-of-10 on stolen base attempts. 
 
Ashley Turner is hitting a team-beset .392 from the plate as the sophomore has started in 32 games this season. She has nine double, one triple and four home runs for 13 RBI. Jacey Henry is hitting .306 in 26 starts with seven doubles and a team-high six home runs for 19 RBI but hasn't played since their game against Southeastern Oklahoma State on March 30. 
 
Kaitlyn Turner has started a team-high 17 games in the circle for the Mustangs. She is 4-11 on the season with an ERA of 4.72. Henry has also started 11 games for the Mustangs with a record of 5-5. 
 
THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs are 28-17 all-time against the Mustangs including 17 straight victories. WT is also 11-9 in games played in Wichita Falls. 
 
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Texas Woman's enters Sunday's doubleheader 4-21 overall and 3-17 in LSC play. One of their four wins came against No. 1 Augustana on Feb. 28 at the UT Tyler Tournament. 
 
The Pioneers are hitting .238 on the season with 22 doubles, four triples and five home runs for 51 RBI. They have 42 walks and 130 strikeouts for an on-base percentage of .297.
 
Paige Tamayo is hitting a team-best .377 with four doubles and four home runs for 7 RBI. She went 2-for-6 last week against Angelo State including a pair of doubles. Taylor Gaulet has a team-high eight doubles as the senior is hitting .230 on the season. The Waco native has also drove in 11 runs. 
 
Tatum Quaker is 2-6 in 11 appearances in the circle for the Pioneers. The freshman has allowed 44 runs, 23 earned, on 60 hits and 13 walks for an ERA of 3.22. She has also struck out a team-high 55 batters including a season-best 11 against UT Permian Basin. 
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs are 30-22 all-time against the Pioneers including a 12-10 record in Denton. They have won three straight after sweeping the series in 2019 at Schaeffer Park. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Buffs went 1-3 last weekend against Cameron and No. 13 Oklahoma Christian. As a team, WT hit .268 with three doubles, one triple and four home runs for 18 runs batted in.
 
Shanna McBroom hit .571 in the four games including her team-leading sixth triple of the season in the second game against Cameron. Erica Vessels had a strong weekend as the senior hit .500 with two home runs in her return to the Sooner State. 
 
LOOKING TO REKINDLE THE FLAME
The Lady Buffs went 12-0 in non-conference play where they hit .413 as a team with 33 doubles, six triples and 22 home runs for 117 RBI. Since the start of LSC play, WT is 10-10 and hitting .286 in LSC play with 26 doubles, six triples and 16 home runs. 
 
Ruby Salzman was on fire during the run hitting .591 with three doubles and seven home runs and 22 RBI for a slugging percentage of 1.136. Since their first loss of the season at UT Tyler, the redshirt sophomore is hitting .338 with one home run.
 
The pitching staff has also seen their ERA go from 2.36 in non-conference play to 4.33 in the 20 games since. 
 
NO. 8 IN THE SCOREBOOK, NO. 1 IN THE NATION
McBroom continues to lead all of NCAA Division II softball in hits with 57. She is actually one of only four players to have over 50 hits this season joined by West Florida's Teala Howard, Lubbock Christian's Savannah Wysocki and WT's Ruby Salzman
 
She is eight hits away from tying her career of 65 set as in 2018 as a sophomore where she hit .394 with eight doubles, three triples and eight home runs for 24 RBI. 
 
McBroom also ranks first in the total bases with 96, one more than Shippenburg's Hannah Marsteller. Her career high is 103 set back in 2018. 
 
NFCA DIVISION II POLL
West Texas A&M is now ranked 12th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NCAA Division II Top 25 released on Wednesday. The Lady Buffs have now been ranked seven straight weeks, their longest such streak since the 2019 season. 
 
Augustana was the unanimous No. 1 this week after picking up all 16 first-place votes. Valdosta State jumped up to second with North Georgia and UT Tyler tied for third. UIndy is fifth followed by Texas A&M-Commerce, Lincoln Memorial, Rollins, Young Harris and Oklahoma Christian. WT is 12th at 24-10 with Texas A&M-Kingsville coming in at 17th. 
 
RECORD WATCH
McBroom continues to move up the record books after another solid weekend at the plate. With her combined eight hits, the Sachse native moved up to fourth in all-time hits with 253. She also moved into a tie for fourth in triples (3).
 
She is also five total bases away from moving up to sixth in the category passing WTAMU Hall of Champion inductee Alyssa Lemos
 
Kyra Lair is also making her mark on the record book as the Canyon native moved up to fifth on the all-time list passing Hannah Newcomb
 
THE MOOK ERA
A new era of Lady Buff softball officially began on June 20, 2019, as Michael Mook took charge as the third head coach in program history.  Under Mook, the Lady Buffs hold a 36-19 overall record and have been ranked in the Top 25 in seven straight weeks. 
 
Mook brought an impressive resume to WT softball with a 154-61 (.716) record at Valley City State University over his four-years with the Vikings including a program record 54 wins and an appearance in the NAIA World Series in the 2019 season.
 
UP NEXT
WT returns to the friendly confines of Schaeffer Park for the final six games of the 2021 regular season beginning with a doubleheader against UT Permian Basin on Friday, April 23.
