Lady Buffs Face Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday

CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M returns to the pitch on Friday, March 26, with a road match against Texas A&M-Commerce. The game originally scheduled for March 24 was pushed back due to COVID-19 protocol. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lion Soccer Field.
 
The match will be streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network and live stats can be found at GoBuffsGo.com. 
 
GOALS GALORE
The Lady Buffs pushed their win streak to three games with a 4-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian on March 10 in Edmond, Okla.
 
Hannah Kelley-Lusk opened the scoring in the ninth minute with Jessica Diaz getting credited with the assist. Asha James doubled the lead three minutes later with her second goal of the season.
 
OC got a goal back in the 56th minute on a strike from Natalie Thomas. Kelley-Lusk secured all three points with two goals in the span of 25 seconds in the 69th minute to complete the hat trick. 
 
Daniela Estrada made two saves in her first stat of the season. 
 
A LOOK AT TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE
Texas A&M-Commerce will play their first match since March 3 on Friday. The Lions are 2-0-0 overall and in LSC play with wins over UT Tyler and OC.
 
Neil Piper is in his 23rd year at A&M-Commerce and has compiled an overall record of 259-143-38. He has led the Lions to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and eight LSC titles. 
 
The Lions are averaging 29.0 shots per game led by senior Leslie Campuzano. The Garland native has scored a team-high four goals on 18 shots, eight of those shots on-target. She was involved in all four goals in the Lions 4-3 overtime victory over UTT in their season opener. 
 
Amber Crews and Mindy Shoffit have also got on the scoresheet for A&M-Commerce. Skyler Sorrell is tied for the team-high with two assists, both of those coming in their 2-1 victory over OC. 
 
Jen Peters has started both games in goal for the Loins but has been replaced at halftimeby by sophomore Lauren Banning. They have combined to make 10 saves on 24 shots. 
 
REVISITING THEIR LAST MEETING
The Lady Buffs defeated A&M-Commerce 2-1 on Oct. 3, 2019 at The Pitch in Canyon behind goals from Taylor Thompson and Kelley-Lusk.
 
Thompson scored her first goal in the 40th minute before the Lions equalized in the 74th minute. Kelley-Lusk scored the winner in the 88th minute on Maliyah Mendoza's second assist of the game. 
 
THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs are 26-15-2 all-time against the Lions having won four straight in the series.
 
A STEADY PRESENCE AT THE BACK
Cheyenne Orozco enters the final LSC match of the season having played a total of 6,183 minutes during her career, the third-most in program history. Only Khadidra Debesette (6,290) and Lindsay McHorse (6,551) have played in more minutes than the Albuquerque, N.M. native.
 
TIME TO REORGANIZE THE TROPHY CLOSET
Kelley-Lusk was named the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II Women's Soccer National Player of the Week after scoring five goals in wins over Midwestern State and OC. 
 
She was also named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week for a third time in her career. After scoring a brace to lead the Lady Buffs to their sixth straight win over MSU, the senior scored her first career hat trick against the Eagles. 
 
MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOK
Kelley-Lusk is putting her name all over the record book as the senior now ranks sixth on the all-time goal list with 29. Her next goal would tie her for fifth on the list with All-American Leslie Briggs.
 
She is also tied with Briggs with 71 points as the Farmington, N.M. native has scored 29 goals and 13 assists during her four-year career in Canyon. 
 
THE NEED TO SCORE FIRST
The Lady Buffs are undefeated this season when they score the first goal. Kelley-Lusk has scored the opening goal during the three-game win streak including two of them in the opening 10 minutes. 
 
A LOOK AT THE CONFERENCE STANDINGS
The Lady Buffs enter Friday's match against A&M-Commerce second in the division with nine points. No. 1 DBU ranks first with 10 points following a 2-2 draw with OC on Wednesday. 
 
In the other division, No. 10 Angelo State has a five-point gap over Texas A&M International with 12 points. Lubbock Christian sits in third with six points.
