CANYON, Texas – No. 8 West Texas A&M will finish its four-game Lone Star Conference road trip on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they take on Angelo State. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the Junell Center. Kent Johnson and Lucas Kinsey will be on the call on Lonestar 98.7.
A LOOK BACK AT TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE
The national-ranked Buffs of West Texas A&M struggled to find any rhythm on offense as they turned the ball over a season-high 21 times in their 86-74 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday night at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville. Qua Grant had a team-high 14 points and seven points as the Buffs dropped their first Lone Star Conference game of the season.
WT finished the contest 24-of-56 (42.9%) from the floor, 9-of-28 (32.1%) from beyond the arc and 17-of-24 (70.8%) from the free throw line with 28 rebounds, seven assists, seven steals and three blocks. Grant reached double figures for the 10th time in his short career with 14 going 4-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Gach Gach also reached double digits with 13 while Brandon Hall chipped in 12 points marking the sixth straight game the senior had scored more than 10 points.
A LOOK AT ANGELO STATE
Angelo State enters Saturday's game 10-3 overall and 3-1 in Lone Star Conference play after defeating Eastern New Mexico 88-69 on Thursday night. The Rams, winners of five of their last six games, coming into Saturday's contest averaging 81.3 points per game while shooting 45.3% from the floor and 36.2% from three-point range.
Antonio Singleton is one of three Rams that averages in double figures with a team-high 13.3 points per game. The senior has come off the bench in eight of his 13 appearances where he has scored in double figures nine times including a 33-point outburst against St. Mary's.
Ronald Bell comes in averaging 12.2 points per contest to go along with his three double-doubles. Daron Mims is the only player to have started in every game for ASU where he averages 11.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
Cinco Boone is currently in his fourth season as the head coach at Angelo State accumulating a record of 70-33. The Portales, N.M. native led the Rams to 15 or more wins in every season since taking over for now-Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard. During his first season in charge, he led the Rams all the way to the South Central Regional Final.
LAST TIME VS. ANGELO STATE
West Texas A&M scored a season-high 120 points in their victory over Angelo State on February 17 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. David Chavlovich had a game-high 29 points while Jordan Evans and Gaige Prim both scored over 20 points.
Chavlovich just missed out on a double-double with 29 points and nine assists while shooting 11-of-21 from the floor, 3-of-10 from three-point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Evans had 24 points going 7-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Saturday's meeting will be the 70th all-time meeting between the two programs and 35th in San Angelo. The Buffs are 44-25 against Angelo State dating back to the 1981-82 season. Head coach Tom Brown has won five straight over the Rams after starting his career 0-3 against ASU. In those five wins,
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
As a team, West Texas A&M continues to lead the nation in three-point attempts (552) while Gach Gach ranks second individually. Through 18 games, WT has attempted more than 50 attempts from beyond the arc than William Jewell, Salem and UC San Diego. Gach, who had been leading the nation heading into Thursday's contest, got leapfrogged by Humbodlt State's Jackson Strong.
After recording only four blocks in the first 13 games of the season, senior Ryan Quaid has seven blocks in the past five including a pair of multi-block games in the past week. His 11 blocks are tied for the team lead with Gach Gach and Eric Mosley as the Fort Collins, Colo. native needs just 11 blocks this season to become the second Buff in program history to record 100 career blocks.
Quaid has also been the top performer on the road for the Buffs this season averaging 14.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest away from the friendly confines of the First United Bank Center. He is also shooting a team-high 52.5% from the floor.
In Thursday's game, Joel Murray recorded three steals to lead the Buffs in steals for the sixth time this season. The Rowlett, Texas native has a team-high 27 steals on the season and is on pace to become the first freshman record 50 or more steals in a season.
Brandon Hall has now scored in double-digits for six straight games, four short of his career set during the final four games of his sophomore and first six games as a junior at Emporia State. After a slow start, the senior guard has been one of the top players for the Buffs during that stretch averaging 15.0 pointers, 3.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest while shooting better than 45% from the floor.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT basketball in November 10th's 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100 win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best winning percentage in program history at 74.5.

Earlier this week, West Texas A&M jumped back to into the Top-10 in both the NABC and D2SIDA National Polls. The Buffs are one of Three LSC schools represented in the NABC poll at eight while also sitting eighth in the D2SIDA rankings.Â
