Buffs Fall to the #11 Greyhounds in the LSC Quarterfinals, 84-73

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Fontaine Williams scored a game high 27 points on Thursday afternoon but it wasn't enough as the Buffs fell to the #11 Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds during the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

WT opened the game with a quick defensive impact as Brock Mishak recorded a steal just seconds after the tip-off. A tight battle ensued with Jailyn Sledge sparking momentum by hitting consecutive 3-pointers, including one on a fast break, to give the team an early lead. James Parlow Jr. contributed significantly with a series of layups and free throws, helping the Buffs maintain competitive scoring throughout the half.

As the clock wound down, Fontaine Williams added a late jumper and Zach Brown connected on a crucial fast-break 3-pointer to narrow the gap. Despite a strong push, the Buffs entered the break trailing Eastern by a slim margin, 41-39.

WT started the second half with Fontaine Williams scoring early, closing the gap to just two points. Parlow tied the game at 43 with a dunk, but Eastern N.M. quickly regained control, extending its lead with a 9-2 run. Despite efforts from Mishak and Brendan Ballard, including a 3-pointer and a layup, the Buffs faced turnovers and missed opportunities that allowed Eastern N.M. to maintain its lead.

The Buffs managed to come within two points after a 3-pointer by Mishak and a series of layups from Williams, but Eastern N.M. responded with a series of successful free throws and layups, regaining a comfortable margin. Williams continued to be a pivotal player, contributing a 3-pointer and multiple layups, but the home team's scoring in the paint secured its advantage.

Fontaine Williams led the team with 27 points, converting 10 of 17 field goals and adding five assists. Sledge contributed 14 points, sinking four 3-pointers and pulling down six rebounds. Mishak recorded 11 points and collected five steals, enhancing the defensive effort. Parlow also posted 11 points while securing three steals.

The Buffs now await their postseason fate as the selection show for the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship is set for 10:00 p.m. CT on NCAA.com. WT entered the LSC Championship outside of the NCAA Tournament field, ranking ninth in the South Central Region.
