CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M take open up the 2018-19 campaign on Sunday, October 28th as they head to the State Capital to take on the University of Texas Longhorns in exhibition action at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
2018-19 SEASON PREVIEW
The Lady Buffs return four of their top five leading scorers from a South Central Regional Finalist squad including WBCA Honorable Mention All-American Lexy Hightower who averaged a team-high 14.4 points per contest during her sophomore campaign. Depth will be a strength once again for the Lady Buffs as All-LSC honorees Tiana Parker and Deleyah Harris return to the starting lineup along with LSC Tournament Most Valuable Player Megan Gamble.
 
WT HEAD COACH KRISTEN MATTIO
Kristen Mattio enters her fourth season as the head coach of the Lady Buffs, registering an overall record of 83-19 (.814) with three NCAA Tournament appearances including a spot in the Regional Finals each of the three seasons and a South Central Regional Championship in 2016-17. Mattio claimed Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time in her career last season.
 
2017-18 SEASON RECAP
WT is coming off of the program's 24th overall and fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason with a run to the South Central Regional Title Game as they finished the 2017-18 season with an overall record of 29-5. WT claimed the Lone Star Conference Regular Season and Tournament Titles with a mark of 16-4 in league action. The 2017-18 campaign marked the sixth straight season of at least 20 victories for the Lady Buffs.
 
WINNING TRADITION
The 2017-18 season marked the sixth-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT has won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 27 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.
 
LADY BUFFS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Lady Buffs made their fifth straight and 24th overall appearance in the NCAA Divisoin II Basketball Postseason in 2017-18 as they are 37-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the 37 wins ranking sixth-most all-time in NCAA Division II and ranks fourth-most among active DII institutions. WT has claimed seven Regional Championships with two appearances in the National Finals since the 1986-87 campaign.
 
In the last five NCAA tournament appearances for WT, the Lady Buffs are 15-5 during the stretch with three South Central Regional Championships and an appearance in the 2014 Division II National Title Game.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The defending Lone Star Conference Champion Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M have been picked as the favorite in the league's preseason poll announced on Wednesday, October 24th during the annual LSC Basketball Online Media Day. The preseason poll is voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives from throughout the league.
 
The Lady Buffs picked up 18 of the possible 31 first place votes for a total of 324 points followed by Angelo State with seven first place votes for a total of 307 points. Tarleton ranked third (four first place, 279) followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (two first place, 252), Eastern New Mexico (199), Cameron (177), Texas Woman's (154), MSU Texas (140), UT Permian Basin (98), Texas A&M-Kingsville (74) and Western New Mexico (42). Marquita Daniels of Angelo State picked up Preseason Player of the Year accolades.

HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 203-30 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.1 percent. WT has averaged 1.085 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of BuffNation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The then #21 Lady Buffs trailed by seven points with under a minute remaining and fought back to have a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but the top seeded and then #2 Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian came away with a thrilling 56-53 win in the South Central Regional Finals at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
 
West Texas A&M was led offensively by Lexy Hightower and Sydney Walton who both scored 12 points followed by Tyesha Taylor with 10, Tiana Parker grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Buffs defensively to go along with three blocks. Parker and Hightower were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.
 
Tournament MVP Tess Bruffey led the way for the Lady Chaps as the senior went 6-of-19 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for a game-high 17 points to go along with 13 rebounds, 10 assists and five blocks for a triple-double, Maddie Chitsey finished the night with 12 points followed by Delaney Gaddis with nine.
 
WT finished the game going 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the field including 5-of-14 (35.7%) from deep and 8-of-11 (72.7%) from the free throw line with 30 rebounds (nine offensive, 21 defensive), 13 assists, 10 turnovers, five blocks and six steals on the night.
 
The Lady Chaps went 22-of-54 (40.7%) from the floor including 6-of-17 (35.4%) from behind the arc and 6-of-8 (75%) from the free throw line with 32 rebounds (nine offensive, 23 defensive), 18 assists, 10 turnovers, eight blocks and one steal in the win.
