CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M women's basketball head coach
Josh Prock has announced the addition of point guard Arissa Garcia for the 2026-27 campaign.
Â
"Arissa is a true point guard; someone who does a great job of getting everyone involved. She brings a lot of experience from the junior college and Division I level. Arissa has a very good basketball IQ; she does a good job of understanding where people are supposed to be in the offense and helps to make sure they get the ball in their comfortable spots" said Prock "She is someone we identified early on as someone who can come in and help us fill the void of our point guard position. We are very excited to add Arissa to our program, she is an outstanding young lady who will be someone our Lady Buff Basketball supporters will love to cheer for and get to know."
Â
Garcia comes to Canyon following one season at Cal Poly where she saw time in 21 games for the Mustangs scoring 68 points to go along with 54 rebounds, 32 assists and 27 steals. She began her collegiate career at Murray State College where she helped lead the Aggies to the NJCAA Region Two Regular Season and Tournament Titles. The 5'6 guard ranked third in NJCAA in assists (190) as a sophomore to claim All-Region accolades.
Â
Arissa saw time in 57 games with 53 starts during her two seasons in Tishomingo, going 206-of-505 (40.8%) from the floor including 63-of-206 (30.6%) from behind the arc and 101-of-143 (70.6%) from the free throw line to average 10.1 points per game to go along with 308 boards, 333 assists, 12 blocks and 138 steals.
Â
"I am super excited for Arissa to be closer to home and get back to playing for a nationally competitive program. Arissa is a winner and I have a ton of respect for Coach Prock and the WT program, so I know it will be a great match" said MSC head coach Nate Levine "WT is getting a high IQ competitor, a multi-dimensional basketball player, and an overall good human being. I look forward to an extremely successful season for WT with their offseason additions!"
Â
The San Antonio native registered a standout prep career at Holmes High School where she averaged 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, surpassing the 1,000-career point plateau. She was a First Team All-District performer in basketball, volleyball and softball for the Huskies. Garcia also excelled in the classroom as a member of the National Honor Society. Arissa is the daughter of Ray and Jeanette Garcia and she is expected to major in General Studies at West Texas A&M.
