#1 Lady Buffs Sweep Past Texas Woman's to Open the Final Weekend of LSC Play

DENTON, Texas – The top ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M overcame an early deficit in the first game and withstood a late comeback in the nightcap as they took the first two games from the Pioneers of Texas Woman's during the final weekend of league play at Pioneer Field in Denton, Texas on Friday night. The Lady Buffs win their 12th straight contest to improve to 48-2 (28-2 LSC) on the season while the Pioneers fall to 31-19 (19-11 LSC) overall.

The Lady Buffs and Pioneers return to action tomorrow afternoon on the final day of Lone Star Conference action with first pitch of TWU's Senior Day set for 2:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.

GAME #1
The Pioneers jumped on the board early in the home half of the first inning with four runs on three hits to go along with two Lady Buff errors for the early 4-0 lead. WT responded in the top of the third inning as Lacey Taylor tied a program single season record in doubles (Alyssa Lemos, 2013) with her 21st of the season to drive in Shea Ibrahim follows two batters later by an Allie Smith RBI double down the left field line to cut the lead to 4-2.

TWU answered in the bottom of the third inning with an Amanda Gray RBI single in the infield to run the lead to 5-2. The Lady Buffs responded again in the top of the fourth inning as Ibrahim singled to right center to drive in Shayne Starkey followed by an Ashley Hardin RBI walk with the bases loaded to make it 5-4. WT would tie the game in the top of the fifth inning as Brittany Cruz lifted a sac fly to center field to score Kourtney Coveney at 5-5.

TWU took another lead in the bottom of the fifth as they took advantage of another WT error for the 6-5 lead. The Lady Buffs tied it again in the top of the sixth as Hardin led off the frame with a line drive triple off of the left center field fence followed by an Andrea Sitter sac fly to left to run the score to 6-6. WT would  put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning as Coveney and Brittany Gehle walked with the bases loaded followed by a Sitter RBI single to give WT the 9-6 lead.

That proved to be more than enough as Kilee Halbert stranded a runner at first to cap off her longest outing of her young career to pick up the win (21-1) for the Lady Buffs, giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts in her 15th complete game of the season.

The Pioneers answered in the home half of the frame as they capitalized on a WT fielding error followed by a Katy Stephens squeeze bunt to make it 4-2.
