CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team beat Southwestern Oklahoma State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon on a goal from
Brady Prescott in the 89
th minute. The win improves the Lady Buffs record to 1-3-0 while the Bulldogs fall to 2-2-0.
After a defensive struggle for the first 50 minutes,
McKynzie Zick kept the Bulldogs scoreless as she denied SWOSU's Cori Kelly from point blank range. That was best chance for both teams until the 89
th minute when WT earned a corner kick with timing running out.
Aryn Douroudian's corner was cleared and landed at the foot of
Emily Cassady. She quickly found space and lifted the ball towards the goal where
Brady Prescott was streaking towards goal. Prescott calmly slotted the service into the left corner past the outreaching hands of SWOSU's Courtney Flores as the final buzzer sounded.
COACHES THOUGHTS- "I have never seen a goal happen that late in the game. I was afraid that the referee was going to say that it didn't go in before the horn went off."
- "The goal obviously won the game but it also means two other things. It meant that our girls learned how to win after struggling in the first three games. Second, that is the first time we have score all season. "
- "We played a little better and played more like a team. We didn't give up and found a way to find a goal."
TURNING POINTWith under 10 seconds remaining in the match,
Emily Cassady gained possession after a deflection on a corner kick. Cassady turned and swung the ball into the box where
Brady Prescott found the back of the net with two seconds left.
