LUBBOCK, Texas – The West Texas A&M No. 21 women's and No. 24 men's track & field teams competed in their final regular season meet of their indoor campaign on Friday at the Red Raider Open in Lubbock, Texas. Highlighting the day was sophomore
Holly Cunigan who for the third time this season broke the school and Lone Star Conference record in women's shot put. Additionally, senior
Tommy Curry would rewrite his own school record in the men's 55m dash.
Along with the two record-breaking performances on Friday, the Buffs and Lady Buffs combined to set five new or improved provisional qualifying times/marks and had three event winners.
Curry would finish the men's 55m competition with a third place finish in the finals where he broke his record with a time of 6.36. Already a provisional qualifier in the 60m converted event, Curry went on to add another provisional time in the 200m at 21.52, placing fifth overall.
Also on the track for the men, senior
Baptiste Moreu would add another provisional time as he placed first in the men's mile race, running a lead time of 4:12.00 (4:09.10 @). Improved provisional marks were then recorded by freshman
Vance O'Rear and junior
Zach Weatherly. O'Rear would do so in the 55m hurdles, placing fifth in the finals with a 7.56. Weatherly would bump his mark in the shot put to 16.75m, good for third place.
Additional top-eight finishes for the Buffs included
Paul Alongo (second, long jump),
Coalson Brown (fourth, high jump), and
Joseph Boyd (seventh, weight throw).
Cunigan would steal the show for the Lady Buffs on Friday night at the Athletic Training Center/"The Bubble" in Lubbock. She demolished her own school and LSC record mark in the shot put field, greatly improving her provisional distance to 14.90m (48'-10.75"). Cunigan's mark would win her the competition.
Junior
Mireia Guarner would also find herself in a first place position before the night was over. She would finish atop the women's mile pack with a time of 5:04.77 (5:01.26@), coming very close to her own school record.
Additional top-eight finishes for the Lady Buffs on Friday included
Courtney Head (third, weight throw),
Haily Berry (eighth, triple jump), and
Abby Tieken (eighth, shot put).
The Buffs and Lady Buffs will return to action next weekend as they both look to defend their LSC titles in the 2015 LSC Indoor Track & Field Championships. The meet will be held on Saturday (Feb. 28) and Sunday (March 1), again at the ATC in Lubbock on the campus of Texas Tech.
