CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer scored right before half time and held off a late rally from Texas Woman's to pick up its second conference win of the season, 1-0. WT made the most of its scoring opportunities as
Karyn Forbes scored the game-winner in the 37
th minute. With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 5-6-0 and 2-2-0 in the Lone Star Conference.
"It feels good to win a game when we scored a first half goal and hold the team scoreless in the second half," head coach
Chad Webb said. "It was a dramatic improvement over out last match. I thought the goal was really good as
Ashlee Craig controlled the ball really well and hit into Karyn's path so she could slot it into the back of the net. Ashlee was terrific tonight and this was one of her best performances of her career. I couldn't be more proud of her and the rest of the girls."
The Pioneers had the two chances early in the seventh minute when Natalia Diaz's free kick was punched away by
McKynzie Zick. Diaz got the end of the rebound and sent the ball wide. The Lady Buffs took advantage of their best scoring chance in the 37
th minute when
Karyn Forbes got on the end of a through ball from
Ashlee Craig. Forbes went far post and Ariana Morrison had no chance to save it.
Both teams found it hard to find any rhythm in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. WT nearly doubled their advantage in the 73
rd minute but
Lucy Chalgren's point blank shot was saved. TWU picked up steam and were pressing to tie the match in the last 15 minutes. The Pioneers Chelsea Martin got on the end of a corner in the 83
rd minute and nearly equalized but Zick was there to shut the door. But WT was unable to clear the ball and it looked like TWU would equalize. But Zick somehow managed to corral the ball safely with the help of her teammates.
