CANYON, Texas – The #13 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M close out their homestand on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the Cameron Aggies to the First United Bank Center for Lone Star Conference action with tipoff set for 3:00 p.m. in Canyon.
 
OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN REWIND
The Buffs went on a 21-3 scoring run late in the second half to pull away from the Oklahoma Christian Eagles, 94-70 during the Lone Star Conference opener at the FUBC on Thursday night. Fontaine Williams scored 26 points, added six assists, and collected three rebounds, leading the team's offensive efforts. Zach Brown contributed 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and recorded two steals. Camden Cowgill posted 16 points with three 3-pointers and added four rebounds. Jailyn Sledge recorded nine points and led the team defensively with five steals and seven rebounds.
 
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
Cameron enters the weekend with an overall record of 3-5 including a 0-1 mark in Lone Star Conference action. Thursday night saw the Aggies fall at Eastern New Mexico, 95-69 in the league opener.
 
Jordan Mitchell leads the way offensively for the Aggies as the senior guard from West Memphis, Arkansas has gone 56-of-115 (48.7%) from the floor including 5-of-18 (27.8%) from behind the arc and 38-of-50 (76%) from the free throw line to average 19.4 points per game to go along with 31 rebounds, 37 assists, 13 steals and a pair of blocks.
 
The Aggies finished the 2024-25 campaign with an overall record of 12-16 with a 9-13 mark in league action to miss the LSC Championships in Frisco. Cameron was tabbed 12th in the LSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Only three returners from last year's squad remained in Lawton highlighted by Williams who was selected to the LSC Players to Watch List.
 
CU HEAD COACH NATHAN KENNEDY
Nathan Kennedy is now in his first season as the Head Coach of Cameron University Men's Basketball, bringing 20 years of NCAA Division II experience as both a player and assistant coach. Over 15 seasons as an assistant, his teams have qualified for five NCAA regional tournaments and made 13 conference tournament appearances.
 
Most recently, Kennedy played a key role in revitalizing the Arkansas Tech University program from 2020-25. The 2023–24 season was a standout, as ATU captured both the Great American Conference (GAC) regular season and tournament titles, earning a berth in the NCAA Central Regional. As a player, Kennedy competed at West Liberty University, contributing to a 2006–07 NCAA Tournament berth and the nation's top scoring offense. He later transferred to Salem University, where he led the team in assists and served as captain.
 
THE SERIES
Saturday afternoon marks the 65th all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Buffaloes and Aggies in a series that dates back to 1979. The Aggies are 6-26 all-time in Canyon and 5-12 inside of the First United Bank Center.
 
Last year's meeting saw five different Buffs finish the game in double-figures in a 91-75 victory in Canyon. Ahamed Mohammed led the way, going 6-of-17 from the floor including 6-of-6 from the free throw line for a team-best 20 points followed by Noah Pagotto (18), Mackenzie Morgan (14), Bob Griechen (12) and Narit Chotikavanic (12). The Buffs shot 47.1% from the floor including 45.5% from behind the arc in the win.
 
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown, now in his 12th season at the helm of the West Texas A&M men's basketball program, has built the Buffs into one of the elite NCAA Division II programs in the nation.  He has guided WT to nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments including the Buffs first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2021. 
 
Brown was hired as the 17th head coach in program history on April 16, 2014. In the past 10 seasons, Coach Brown and his staff are 274-62 (.815) and an average of 27 wins a season with appearances in the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four (2) and National Title game. During his time in Canyon, Brown is 293-75 (.796) overall and 155-43 (.783) in league action. 
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
Defending Regional Champion Dallas Baptist claimed 42 of the possible 51 first place votes for a total of 850 points to sit atop of the poll followed by St. Mary's (two first place, 724), Lubbock Christian (four first place, 720), St. Edward's (669) and West Texas A&M (two first place, 654) to round out the top five.
 
Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico tied for sixth with 592 points followed by Midwestern State (558), UT Permian Basin (468), Texas A&M International (one first place, 350), Texas A&M-Kingsville (330), Cameron (301), Oklahoma Christian (266), UT Tyler (260), Western New Mexico (193), UT Dallas (188) and Sul Ross State (88).
 
St. Mary's Damani Claxton was tabbed the league's Preseason Player of the Year. The Bronx, New York native averaged 17.1 points, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game last season. He made 45 3-pointers and shot 80.4 percent from the free throw line. Claxton was named LSC Newcomer of the Year and earned first-team All-LSC honors.
 
NABC DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL
The Buffaloes jumped two spots to 13th in this week's edition of the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Tuesday afternoon. The South Central Region is represented by Lubbock Christian (4th), St. Mary's (9th), St. Edward's (11th), West Texas A&M (13th), Black Hills State (21st) and Angelo State (RV). 
 
2024-25 RECAP
The 2024-25 campaign saw WT made the NCAA National Tournament for a ninth-consecutive season where three freshmen made the LSC All-Freshman team. The Buffs also posted a 3.48 GPA in the classroom, tops in the Lone Star Conference for a second consecutive year. WT was named a recipient of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Award as Brock Mishak and Nicholas Jett were named to the NABC Honor Court.
