CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes fired an even-par round of 284 on Thursday afternoon to sit third on the team leaderboard following the opening day of the 2024 NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional Championships at NMSU Golf Course (Par 71 – 7,242 Yards) in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
 
WT registered 14 birdies on Thursday highlighted by four feathers from Pepe De La Concepción Quílez, the Spain native shot in the red with a one-under 70 to sit tied for 12^th on the individual leaderboard.
 
Western New Mexico enters Friday's second round with a four-stroke leader (277, -7) over LSC foe Oklahoma Christian (-3, 281) followed by the Buffs in third (E, 284). WNMU's Joey Geary had an impressive opening round, shooting a 65 (-6) to hold a two-stroke lead over Sangha Park of UT Permian Basin and Chris Wardrup of CSU San Bernardino (67, -4).
 
The Buffs will be paired with Sonoma State and Simon Fraser on Friday with traditional tee times starting at 10:00 a.m. in Las Cruces.
