CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes are heading to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the second time in program history and the first since 2015 as they carded rounds of 284, 279 and 291 for a 854 (+2) to finish fourth at the South Central/West Regional Championships at NMSU Golf Course (Par 71 – 7,242 Yards) in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
WT registered 15 birdies on Saturday highlighted by five feathers from
Luis Palomo with three of those coming on the front nine on his way to a round in the red with a 68 (-3) as the sophomore from Barcelona, Spain finished tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard with a 210 (-3). Amarillo product
Wyatt Provence carded a 72 (+1) on in the final round with three to also finish tied for 7
th (-3, 210).
Western New Mexico fired a 284 on Saturday to finish with a team score of 850 (-2) to win the Regional Championship by two strokes over Oklahoma Christian and Colorado Christian (E, 852), the Buffs finished fourth followed by Cal State Monterey Bay in fifth (+13, 865) to advance to the DII National Championships.
CCU's Dylan Arthur claimed the individual crown with a -9 (204) as Chris Wardrup of Cal State San Bernardino (-6, 207) and Giulio Zanichello of Academic of Art (-6, 207) claimed a spot in the Nationals field as the top two individuals not on an advancing team.
The NCAA Division II National Championships will take place on May 21-25 at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Florida as a part of the 2024 Division II Festival.
