Buffs Fire a 272 in the First Round, Hold the Lead After Day One

CANYON, Texas – 
The West Texas A&M Buffaloes made a statement during Monday's opening two rounds of the 2022 Lone Star Conference Men's Golf Championships as they shot a 552 (-24) to hold a two stroke lead on the team leaderboard at Squaw Valley Golf Course (Par 72, Rating 74.2, Slope 134; 7,063 yards).
 
The Buffs came out firing in the opening round as they shot a 272 (-16) for an eight stroke lead over Texas A&M International following the first 18 holes of play. Monday's opening round is the lowest team score ever at the LSC Championship by the Buffs and the lowest single-round team score in program history.
 
WT registered 24 birdies and two eagles in the opening round as Jarvinen tallied nine feathers including three straight to open the day for a 66 (-6) to sit tied for second. It marks the third time in Jarvinen's career that the senior has fired a 66 in a round, tying for second on WT's all-time low-round list with three other individuals while also becoming the lowest round ever by a Buff during the LSC Championship.
 
The second round saw low scores from the entire field as 16th ranked Midwestern State shot a 271 (-17) to cut WT's lead to two strokes entering Tuesday's final round of stroke play. WT registered 24 feather to go along with a pair of Eagles in the second round to shoot eight-under (280) for a 36-hole total of 552 (-24).
 
Mauricio Figueroa of Texas A&M International leads the way on the individual leaderboard with a 132 (-12) highlighted by a seven-under 65 in the opening round to hold a two-stroke lead over four players including Jarvinen at 134 (-10).
 
The top four teams following tomorrow morning's final round of stroke play will move into afternoon semifinal medal match play, those two winners will advance to Championship Wednesday in Glen Rose as match play will decide the LSC Champion.
