#5 Buffs Use the Long Ball in Friday’s Doubleheader Split

CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M connected on eight homeruns including five in the nightcap as they split Friday Lone Star Conference doubleheader action at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas against the Texas A&M International Dustdevils.
 
The Buffs and Dustdevils conclude their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the finale set for 1 p.m. in Canyon.
 
GAME 1
The Dustdevils got on the board early as Ronnie Bailey lifted a solo homerun just inside the foul pole down the left field line followed later in the frame by RBI doubles by Antonio Buentello RBI and Brock Hargen for the 3-0 lead. 
 
WT responded in the home half as Ryan Johnson scored from third on a wild pitch followed by an Adam Becker two-run bomb to right center, the Buffs weren't done yet as Eric Ortiz connected on a two-run shot off of the protective net in right field for the 5-3 lead. 
 
The Buffs added to their lead in the second as Johnson lifted a sac fly to deep right center to score Paul Wittmann followed by a Kennedy Badgett RBI groundout that plated Eddy Savoie to make it 7-3. TAMIU used the long ball to cut into the lead in the third on a Buentello solo shot to left followed later in the frame by a Cameron Yeldell three-run shot to tie it up at 7-7.
 
TAMIU took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Ariben Gutierrez grounded out to third to plate Buentello for the 8-7 lead. The Buffs responded again in the home half as Johnson lifted a solo homerun down the left field line to tie it up at 8-8. The Dustdevils answered in the top of the sixth with a Buentello two-run homerun to center field for the 10-8 lead.
 
Justin Zamora picked up the loss (0-1) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing two earned runs on two hits with no walks and no strikeouts in his 0.0+ innings of work.
 
GAME 2
International jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as Buentello singled to left with the bases loaded and nobody out to drive in two, WT answered in the home half of the frame as Will Fuenning singled to left field with two outs to drive in Johnson to make it 2-1.
 
WT tied up the game in the bottom of the second inning as Bryant Bailey took the first pitch of the frame deep to left field followed later in the frame by a Badgett three-run tank to left, Becker crushed a solo shot to left for his 12th of the season followed by an Ortiz RBI single up the middle for the 7-2 lead.
 
The Buffs added to their lead in the third as Wittmann doubled to the gap in left center to score Izaiah Madrid followed by a Johnson sac fly to deep right field as Wittmann tagged up and scored to make it 9-2. WT extended their lead in the fourth as solo homeruns by Fuenning and Ortiz made it 11-3.
 
WT wasn't done yet as Becker, Fuenning, Ortiz and Bailey all drove in runs in the home half of the fifth to extend the lead to 15-3. The Buffs added to their lead for a final time in the bottom of the sixth as Clay Artho lifted a sac fly to right field to score Jacob Butler for the 16-3 victory.
 
Nick Marshall picked up the win (9-1) for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of work.
