ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The No. 6 Lady Buffs and No. 9 Buffs put on a show on the final day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic highlighted by
Benjamin Azamati's historic performance in the 60-meter dash while
Zada Swoopes and
Gerard Bryant also registered record breaking achievements. Over the two-day event, WT collected 12 provisional marks.
Azamati returned to the starting line in style as the sophomore broke the school and LSC 60-meter record in the preliminaries with a time of 6.55. The Ghana product won the event after tying the indoor NCAA Division II record at 6.54, tying North Carolina Central's Jason Smoots NCAA record set back in 2003. Azamati's time in the finals defeated LSU's Da'Marcus Fleming by .06 seconds.
Zada Swoopes continues to write the record books as the senior has the Top 5 marks in program history in the women's weight throw. The Whitewright, Texas product shattered her previous school record with a 63-4.0 (19.30m) provisional mark on her sixth attempt to finish first, nearly five feet ahead of New Mexico States Phetisang Makhethe. Swoopes also won the shotput with her season-best mark 56-4.75 (17.19m).
Gerard Bryant broke his own school record in the heptathlon after the Amarillo native finished second in the competition with 5,249 points. Bryant finished first in the 60-meter hurdles of the heptathlon with a personal-best 8:48. Freshman
Traise Cain finished seventh with 44,570 points.
Sifiso Miya made his season debut for the Maroon & White finishing fifth in the long jump with a 23-10.0 (7.26m) jump followed by
Peniel Richard who finished 11
th at 21-2.0 (6.45).
Seniru Amarasinghe finished second in the high jump after easily clearing 6-7.5 (2.02m).
In the weight throw,
Ray Dixon recorded another Top 10 mark the Llano, Texas product threw the second-best mark in program history at 59-4.25 (18.09m). Dixon now owns all of the schools Top 10 marks.
Luke Holcombe threw a personal best mark 50-3.25 (15.32m) in the shotput to also post a Top 10 finish.
Christian Marshall finished 10
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.21 while
Quinton Sansing led the herd in the 400-meter. The senior ran 48.70 followed by
Malick Diop and
Ohdel James in 18
th and 20
th with respective times of 48.99 and 49.59.
Leah Belfield was WT's lone runner in the 200-meter where she finished 12
th with a time of 24.55.
Jordan Brown made her season debut for the Maroon & White with a time of 57.73 to finish 17
th in the 400m.
Taylor Nelloms led the Lady Buffs in three events including a pair of Top 10 marks. The sophomore from Humble, Texas registered the second-highest mark in the high jump with a personal-best 5-9.25 (1.76) to finish second while also finishing third in the triple jump with a season-best 42-7.50 (12.99m). In the long jump she finished 13
th at 17-9.75 (5.43).
Brooke Urban also competed in the high jump for WT where she finished seventh at 5-1.25 (1.56m).
Elliot Harrison and
Laiten Greeson each finished in the Top 10 of the women's pentathlon at sixth and eighth. Harrison collected a personal-best 3,444 points while Greeson followed at 3,170.
