Lady Buffs Face No. 1 DBU in NCAA Second Round

CANYON, Texas -- The West Texas A&M women's soccer team faces the top-ranked team in the nation, Dallas Baptist, in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Second Round matchup held at the Patriot Soccer Field is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m.

WT looks to snap a six-game losing streak to the Patriots on Sunday as Dallas Baptist leads the series 11-3-1. The Patriots won the regular season meeting by a score of 2-1 in Dallas.
 
SCOUTING DALLAS BAPTIST
The top-ranked Patriots, winners of the Lone Star Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles, enter the Second Round contest on a nine-game winning streak. During its winning streak, DBU has outscored opponents 25-4. Led by Annie Severide and Michelle Gonzalez, the Patriot offense averages almost 2.4 goals per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT
WT fell to Midwestern State in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Lady Buffs scored early on a free kick from Emily Avila and held off the Mustangs pushes for a tying goal. Midwestern State broke through the WT defense in the 70th minute to tie the game. The Mustangs pulled ahead with nine minutes to play, eventually taking the game, 2-1.
 
A LOOK AT THE BRACKET
No. 4 seed WT defeated No. 5 St. Mary's to take on top-ranked Dallas Baptist. On the other side of the bracket, sixth-seeded UC-Colorado Springs eliminated third-seeded Angelo State to advance to play Colorado School of Mines. The winner of both matches plays for the South-Central Regional title next week.
 
HAULING IN AWARDS
Eight Lady Buffs were honored at the Lone Star Conference Awards Banquet held before the semifinal matches. Emily Avila, Asha James, and Maria-Frances Serrant earned First Team All-Conference while Reagan Heelan and Maliyah Mendoza earned Second Team. Reagan Matacale represented WT on the Third Team. Additionally, Heelan, Ashley Silvestre, and Mandy Stricker earned spots on the All-Academic team. James and Serrant brought home specialty awards as James was named the Midfielder of the Year, and Serrant was named the Newcomer of the Year, Forward of the Year, and Player of the Year.
