A WILD ONE IN TYLER
The Lady Buffs needed a goal in the 100th minute from
Hannah Kelley-Lusk to secure a 5-4 victory over UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon in Tyler.
WT scored four unanswered goals in the first half after going down a goal in the 3rd minute.
Emily Avila,
Alex Jurado,
Asha James and Kelley-Lusk all got on the scoresheet in what looked like another dominant victory for the Lady Buffs.
UT Tyler had other ideas as they scored three in the second half including a penalty kick from Jordan Colbert in the 89th minute to send it to overtime.
Kelley-Lusk took advantage of a stray pass from the Patriots backline to score the golden goal for her 13th game-winning goal, the second-most in program history.
A LOOK AT ANGELO STATE
Angelo State enter Wednesday's contest at 8-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Lone Star Conference play following a 2-1 defeat to No. 8 Dallas Baptist. The Rambelles are led by Travis McCorkle, who led them to a perfect 10-0-0 record in the spring.
The Rambelle attack is orchestrated by midfielders Avery McNeme and Valerie Solis. McNeme, a grad student from Lubbock, has a team-high 13 points in 11 starts this season with three goals and seven assists. Solis has also dished out seven assists to go along with two goals, one of those coming on Saturday against DBU. Cindy Rodriguez and Grace Jordan are tied for the team lead in goals with four.
The Rambelles own one of the top defenses in the LSC as they holding opponents to less than a goal per game. Kira Miller is a huge part of that success as the senior keeper from Frisco ranks third in the nation in shutouts with seven. She also ranks 21st in goalie minutes played and goals against average.
THE SERIES
WT leads the all-time series 21-14-7 that dates back to Oct. 11, 1996. The Lady Buffs are unbeaten in five straight games against the Rambelles including a 0-0 draw in their last trip to San Angelo on Oct. 2018.
THAT'S A NICE CHANGE
For just the ninth time since 2015, WT won a game when conceding the first goal. Prior to Saturday's triumph over UT Tyler, the Lady Buffs were 8-36-2 (.195) when going down a goal. They are also 62-4-4 (.914) when scoring first, talk about polar opposites.
WT also improved to 26-3-1 (.883) when Kelley-Lusk scores, something she has down a league-best 14 times this season.
FREE KICK QUEEN
Avila has scored five goals this season, two more than she had scored in her previous three seasons combined. What may be more impressive is that all five goals have come off set pieces including a penalty kick against Texas A&M-Commerce.
IT'S BEEN AWHILE
WT is close to accomplishing something that hasn't happened since 2008, having multiple players with double-digit goals. Elisabeth Markussen and Lindsay McHorse were the last duo to achieve the feat when they combined for 32 goals.
Kelley-Lusk has already reached the mark with 14 goals in eight games with James chipping in eight goals in 10 starts.
SCORING GOALS IN BUNCHES
The Lady Buffs own NCAA Division II's top scoring offense at 3.9 goals per game. They also rank second in goals (39), third in points per game (9.8/game) and fourth in total points (98).
Kelley-Lusk also leads the nation in goals per game (1.8/game) and ranks second in goals (14) and points (33) behind Hannah Dunn of Catawba.
UNITED SOCCER COACHES TOP 25
WT moved up to 19th in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's Top 25 released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Buffs are one of three schools from the South Central represented in the sixth edition of the poll. UC-Colorado Springs moved up five spots to seventh with DBU dropping back two spots to 10th. WT is now in the Top 20 at 19th with Colorado School of Mines, Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerce, Colorado Mesa and Westminster receiving votes.
UP NEXT
