#7 West Texas A&M Opens Four-Game Home Stand on Thursday

CANYON, Texas –
No. 7 West Texas opens a four-game home stand on Thursday, Jan. 7, when they host Western New Mexico at the First United Bank Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m with Kent Johnson and Lucas Kinsey on the call on LoneStar 98.7.

A LOOK BACK AT CAMERON
Freshman guard Qua Grant scored a team-high 22 points as No. 11 West Texas A&M extended their win streak to six games on Saturday afternoon with a 83-70 win over Cameron at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla.

In the win, WT shot 27-of-58 (46.6%) from the floor, 13-of-33 (39.4%) from three-point range and 16-of-25 (64.0%) from the free throw line with 38 rebounds, 15 assists, eight blocks and four steals. Grant's 22 points were the second-most in his young career as the freshman went 7-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and 5-of-7 from the free throw line while pulling down six rebounds. Ryan Quaid also reached double figures with 15 points and four rebounds en route to becoming the first player in program history with 900 rebounds. Brandon Hall continues to fill the stat sheet as the senior had 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists while fellow senior Gach Gach had eight points to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds and four blocks.

A LOOK AT WESTERN NEW MEXICO
Western New Mexico enters the week 4-13 overall and 1-9 in Lone Star Conference play after falling to UT Permian Basin at home last week. After opening the season 3-1 with wins over New Mexico Highlands, Fort Lewis College and Texas A&M International before dropping 10 straight.

The Mustangs picked up their lone LSC win of the season on the road against #25 Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 24 ending a 10-game losing skid. They overcame a 10-point deficit to defeat the Lions with a pair of free throws late in overtime. Jon-Reese Woodson paced WNMU with a 17 points, 11 rebound double-double while Amarion Cash chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

Woodson is the leading scorer for the Mustangs with 12.8 points per contest while shooting better than 45.0 percent from the floor. Willie McCray is also averaging over 10 points at 11.2 points per game while shooting 35.6 percent from the floor, 29.2 percent from three-point range and 66.2 percent from the charity stripe.

Matt Enriquez is in his third season as the head coach at WNMU where he led the program to the program's best recorded since 2012-13 last season. He was named the head coach on April 10, 2016 after spending the previous nine seasons as an assistant.

LAST TIME VS. WESTERN NEW MEXICO
Two nights after a dramatic victory over UT Permian Basin, WT did not have a let down against Western New Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 5, defeating the Mustangs 72-55 at Drag's Court. Gach Gach was one of four Buffs in double figures with 18 points while pulling down 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Buffs shots 22-of-56 (39.3%) from the floor, 6-of-23 (26.1%) from three-point range and 22-of-27 from the charity stripe as they improved to 3-0 all-time on the road against WNMU.

INSIDE THE SERIES
West Texas A&M leads the all-time series 9-4 including 2-1 in games played in Canyon. Since falling to the Mustangs 75-74 in overtime on January 23, 1993, the Buffs have won two straight by a combined 80 points.  Head coach Tom Brown is a perfect 5-0 all-time against WNMU.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
A win on Thursday would give head coach Tom Brown 118 wins since taking over the program in 2015 tying him with Mark Adams (current Texas Tech assistant coach) for the fifth-most wins in program history. A win would also give the two coaches an identical record (118-38) and win percentage (75.6%) through 156 games.

West Texas A&M enters Thursday's matchup against the Mustangs on a 18-game home win streak. Over the past three seasons, the Buffs are an incredible 41-1 (97.7%) in games played at the First United Bank Center including 9-0 this season whey they have won by an average of 19.6 points. .

During their six-game win streak, WT has played some of their best basketball fo their season averaging 83.8 points per game to outscore opponents by 14.4 points. While Ryan Quaid has scored a team-high 18.7 points per game during the stretch, Brandon Hall has been the top player for the Buffs scoring 15.5 points per game to go along with 6.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

With four rebounds on Saturday in Lawton, Okla., Ryan Quaid became the first player in program history to record 900 rebounds. The senior, who will play in his 127 game on Thursday, is 12 rebounds shy of pulling down 300-plus rebounds for the third consecutive season. He is also 23 points short of becoming the third player in Buff history to scored 1,500 points.

Super sub Jordan Collins scored 10 points on Saturday marking the first time since January 2018 that the junior had reached double-digits in consecutive games. The Houston, Texas native has been a key player in WT's current form hitting 25-of-29 (51.0%) from downtown in the last six games including multi three-pointers in five straight.

WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT basketball in November 10th's 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100 win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best winning percentage in program history at 75.6.

GACH NAME LSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
West Texas A&M senior Gach Gach was named the Lone Star Conference Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week after leading the No. 11 Buffs to road wins over MSU Texas and Cameron this past weekend.

Gach becomes the second Buff this season to earn weekly defensive honors after averaging 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. The Austin, Minn. native led a defensive unit that held opponents to 66.0 points per game and only allowed them to shoot 39.2 percent from the floor and 27.3 percent from three-point range. Individually his best performance came in Saturday's 83-70 win over CU where he pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds while tying a career-high with four blocks.

A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
WT moved back into the Top-10 in both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D2SIDA National Rankings released on Tuesday afternoon. The Lone Star Conference leaders moved up four sports to seventh in the NABC poll while ranking eighth in the weekly SID rankings.
