CANYON, Texas – No. 11 West Texas A&M finish their three-game road trip on Saturday, Feb. 2, against Cameron at Aggie Gym. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT with Kent Johnson and Lucas Kinsey on the call on LoneStar 98.7.
A LOOK BACK AT MSU TEXAS
No. 11 West Texas A&M defeated MSU Texas 87-62 on Thursday evening at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas behind a near triple-double from Brandon Hall giving the Buffs consecutive road wins in the series for the first time since 1959. Hall finished the game with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the WT reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth straight season under head coach Tom Brown.
WT shot 29-of-71 (40.8%) from the floor, 9-of-32 (28.1%) from three-point range and 20-of-24 (83.3%) from the free throw line while pulling down 44 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and three blocks with only five turnovers. Hall reached the 20-poinit plateau for third time this season after shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Ryan Quaid finished the game with 16 points, eight rebounds two blocks and two steals while Jordan Collins chipped in 14 points off the bench. Gach Gach reached double figures for the first time in four games with 12 points after going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
Head coach Tom Brown has led the Buffs to four consecutive 20 wins season for the first time since Rick Cooper accomplished the feat from 1997-2001.
Gach Gach has enjoyed playing Cameron during his two-year career in Canyon where he has averaged 22.7 points per game while shooting 53.3 percent from three-point range. Earlier this season, the senior scored a career-high 31 points in a 91-79 win over the Aggies where he connected on eight three-pointers.
In Thursday's win over MSU Texas, Brandon Hall led the team in scoring, rebounds and assists for the second time this season. The senior was within reach of a triple-double finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. He has also scored in double figures in 11 straight games including a trio of 20-plus performances.
Ryan Quaid now ranks third in all-time scoring after passing former teammate Jordan Evans with a three-pointer in the second half of Thursday's win over MSU. The senior's 1,462 points leave him 38 points shy of joining David Chavlovich and Martin Lattibeaudiere in the 1,500-point club. The senior is also two rebounds short of 900 for his career.
Jordan Collins continues to bring the energy off the bench for the Buffs tying a career-high in three-pointers and points on Thursday. The junior scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half including a stretch where he made a three-pointer on three consecutive offensive positions.
Eric Mosley is having his best season in Maroon & White where he is playing a career-high 13.7 minutes per game. Another huge bench presence for WT, Mosley has pulled down five-plus rebounds in five games this season including a career-high eight against Lubbock Christin on Dec. 6.
A LOOK AT CAMERON
Cameron overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat Eastern New Mexico 88-84 on Thursday night in Lawton Okla. The Aggies are playing some of their best basketball of the season at the moment having won three of their past four games to improve to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in LSC play.
CU averages 75.7 points per contest shooting 39.7 percent from the floor, 35.2 percent from three-point range and 72.9% from the free throw line. Zach Dumas is the leading scorer for the Aggies at 13.3 points followed closely by Tyus Momoh at 12.8. Dumas has cooled down after a blazing hot start to the season where he scored in double figures in 12 of the first 13 games including four games with 20-plus.
Momoh is the second top scoring option for CU but is also the top distributor on the team with 4.4 assists per game. He has dished out five or more assists in 10 games including a season-high eight against ENMU on Thursday.
Andrew Brown is in his third season as the CU head coach after being named the program's 12th head coach on April 1, 2016. During his first season, he led the Aggies to the LSC Tournament where they advanced to the semifinals. Prior to CU, he won over 100 games at Northwestern Oklahoma State where he led the Rangers from 2007-15.
LAST TIME VS. CAMERON
Gach Gach scored a career-high 31 points as the Buffs defeated Cameron 91-79 on Nov. 29 in their first meeting of the season at the First United Bank Center. The senior's eight three-pointers are fifth-most in a single game in program history.
Ryan Quaid also reached double figures with 16 points and seven rebounds with Qua Grant adding 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Zachary Dumas had a team-high 25 points for the Aggies.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Saturday's game will be the 52nd all-time meeting between the programs with WT holding a 35-16 advantage. The Buffs have five straight in the series since falling to the Aggies in the 2016 Lone Star Conference Tournament in Allen, Texas.
WT have won four straight games in Aggie Gym with the past two meetings going into overtime. On January 7, 2017, the two teams played four overtimes with WT prevailing 100-98.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT basketball in November 10th's 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100 win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best winning percentage in program history at 75.3.
A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
The Buffs moved up to five spots to 11th in both the NABC and D2SIDA National Rankings released on Tuesday afternoon. WT is one of three teams ranked in the Top-20 in the NABC poll while tying for 11th with Lynn in the D2SIDA poll.
