No. 5 Buffs Split Twin Bill at No. 19 Texas A&M-Kingsville

  • The Lead: The No. 5/14 West Texas A&M baseball split a doubleheader at No. 19 Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday at the Buffs posted three runs in the 11th for an 8-5 win in the opener as TAMUK came back for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.  The teams will conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Buffs need a win to split the series.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In the opener, WT took a 3-0 lead in the fourth courtesy of a leadoff walk and double from junior Henry Hausman and a sacrifice fly from senior Nick Canas for a 1-0 lead.Junior Tag Baxter doubled down the left field line for a score and freshman Tommy Williams continued his impressive start to his career with a double to right for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Buffs swelled the lead to 4-0 in the sixth on another sacrifice fly for sophomore Darius Carter.
  • The Javelinas plated one run in the bottom of the frame on an Austin Ingraham single up the middle and added four runs in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI triple, RBI single and a two run home run by Manny Loredo for a 5-5 score.
  • WT had a great chance in the eight with two on, but were unable to convert and TAMUK left one stranded in the bottom of the frame.
  • In the 11th, senior Brandon Marrero singled through the left side and a Carter sacrifice bunt moved Marrero to second, followed by a Williams single to load the bases.
  • An error proved costly for the Javelinas as Williams scored unearned and junior Christian Loya doubled to center for a score for an 8-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the 11th, two singles and a passed ball put two on, but junior reliever Dominic Yearego ended the threat with a strikeout of Loredo for the win.
  • In the second game, TAMUK plated four runs in the third, highlighted on another home run from Ingraham – a two run shot.
  • WT responded in kind with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game on a bases loaded walk and a bases-clearing three RBI double from senior Bodie Bryan.
  • An error proved costly in the bottom of the sixth as senior Phillip Muldrow relieved starter Zach Dixon to begin the frame and loaded the bases with one out.
  • Senior Tate Huebner relieved Muldrow and an error plated the go ahead run for a 5-4 TAMUK lead.
  • Looking for last-inning heroics once again, the Buffs loaded the bases as TAMUK went to the bullpen, but the Buffs were unable to get the equalizer.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the first game, WT had eight runs on 11 hits, while TAMUK had five runs on nine hits and one error.
  • Yearego (1-0) took the win in 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run, walked one and fanned seven as the Buffs struck out the Javelinas 11 times in the game.
  • Senior Jimmy Cubillos, Baxter and Williams each had two hits in the game, while Canas recorded a triple and the Buffs recorded five doubles by five different players.
  • Senior Ryan Larison began the game, going five innings, allowing one hit, one earned run, walked two and fanned four.Junior Braden Baker pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and walked one.
  • Isaiah Lybarger pitched saw four innings in the start for TAMUK, allowing five hits, four earned runs, walked one and fanned two.
  • Seth Hubert (3-1) took the loss, in four innings, allowing five hits and three unearned runs, with two walks and two strikeouts.
  • For the second game, the Buffs had four runs on seven hits, but committed three errors, while TAMUK had five runs on six hits.
  • Dixon went five innings, allowing five hits, four runs – three earned, walked two and fanned four.
  • Muldrow (0-1) took the loss in 0.1 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run.
  • Cubillos and Loya each had two hits for the Buffs, while Ingraham went 1 for 2 with two RBI for the Javelinas.
  • TAMUK starter Lee May Gonzales (3-1) earned the win in six innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, walked three and fanned three as Joshua Valdez earned the save in 0.2 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs and Javelinas conclude the series Sunday, while WT will head home to host Angelo State next Friday for a four-game series, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Wilder Park.
