Buffs Use Big Innings for 19-2 Victory and Series Sweep of Adams State

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 19, Adams State 2

  • The Lead: The Wes Texas A&M baseball team used three big innings, including nine runs in the fourth inning in a 19-2 win over visiting Adams State Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park.  The Buffs hit three home runs in the game in the win for the four-game series sweep.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT senior pitcher Noah Draper got a ground out on the third pitch of the game for the first out in the top of the first, but nine-straight balls followed with two walks and a mound meeting.
  • After a lengthy at bat for Tyler Zanski, he hit the 3-2 offering up the middle for a RBI single and a 1-0 lead for the Grizzlies.
  • Draper got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the inning, minimizing the damage to just one run.
  • A double from yesterday's walk-off home run hero senior Bodie Bryan and an error put runners at the corners for the Buffs with nobody out in the bottom of the first.
  • The Buffs tied the game on an interference call and throwing error as Bryan scored, followed by a sacrifice fly from junior Henry Hausman for a 2-1 lead.
  • Junior Darin Cook relieved Draper for the third inning as Draper went two innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned one.
  • A hit batsman and a passed ball put a runner in position for the Grizzlies in the top of the fourth with one out.Cook got out of the jam with a pair of easy ground outs.
  • In the bottom of the inning, senior Nick Canas began the frame with a double to left and move to third on a ground out.Junior Tax Baxter hit a single to center, plating Canas for a 3-1 lead.
  • The Buffs loaded the bases as Trent Hughes replaced starter Brett Aker as Bryan singled up the middle, plating two and a 5-1 lead.The lead extended to 6-1 with a bases loaded walk, followed by a grand slam to center from Hausman for a 10-1 lead.Canas then hit a ball to center and bounced over the head of the center fielder for an inside the park home run.
  • The Grizzlies loaded the bases with two out in the top of the fifth with two walks and a single, but after a long at bat, Cook got Eddie Chessel to swing at strike three for his fourth K of the game and end the threat.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Grizzlies got a walk, single and error put runners at the corners with one out.
  • Cook got his sixth strikeout of the game for the second out and a ground out to short ended the inning.
  • WT plated five more runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 16-1 lead, while Adams State came back in the top of the eighth with a RBI sacrifice fly for a 16-2 score.
  • Junior Tag Baxter led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run to right – the third home run of the game for WT.
  • Sophomore Ethan Washburn got his second hit of the game with a double to the gap, followed by a double from junior Christian Loya for an 18-2 lead and the Buffs added another run for a 19-2 score.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT scored a season-high 19 runs on 14 hits with one error, while Adams State had two runs on six hits with three errors.
  • Cook picked up the win in five innings of work, allowing two hits, walking four and striking out six as he improved to 2-1 on the year.
  • Adams State starter Brett Aker (0-1) took the loss in 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, six runs – four earned, walked one and fanned two.
  • The Buffs had a season-high three home runs in the game, while hitting five doubles.
  • Hausman drove in six in the game to lead the Buffs on 1 of 3 with a run scored.Senior Luis Amaro was 1 for 4 withthree RBI and a run scored, while Baxter was 2 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

  • The Buffs head on the road at Arkansas-Fort Smith for a three-game series next week, before returning home to host Tarleton State Mar. 2-4, at Wilder Park in a non-conference series.
