HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • In the opener, the Buffs plated runs in each of the first five innings with a single run in the first as senior Nick Canas singled home senior Luis Amaro for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Buffs plated three runs in the second as freshman Tommy Williams singled home a run and Amaro doubled home two runs.
  • UAFS got on the board in the bottom of the inning on a two out back-to-back doubles from Jace Pitchford and Drew Duncan for a 4-1 score.
  • WT added two more runs in the third as junior Tag Baxter singled home two runs for a 6-1 score and then the Buffs added three in the fourth on two RBI singles and an error for a 9-1 lead.
  • One more run crossed in the fifth for the Buffs on a junior Justice Nakagawa home run to left for his second round-tripper of the season.
  • From there, the Buffs looked to be cruising, but UAFS had other plans in the bottom of the sixth as 11 batters came to the plate with the Lions scoring five runs on four hits and two WT errors, while leaving the bags full.
  • WT senior starter Ryan Larison gave up six runs, but three were earned for the game and five runs in the frame with three earned as senior Tate Huebner and junior Braden Baker all pitched in the inning.
  • The Buffs added a key run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk for Amaro and an 11-6 score.
  • The Lions loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Baker fanned pinch-hitter Phillip Cebuhar to end the game for his first save as a Buff.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1):

  • WT scored 11 runs on 14 hits with two errors, while UAFS had six runs on nine hits with two errors.
  • WT scored in six of the seven innings and the first five.
  • Larison (3-0) earned the win going 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs – three earned, walked two and fanned a season-high ten Lions, matching his career-best set against Texas A&M-Kingsville last season (3/12/17).

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • The nightcap saw a dominating pitching performance from UAFS starter Zach Burch who went the distance, allowing one hit, one earned run, while walking four and fanning six as he completely stymied the Buffs.
  • WT junior Christian Loya broke up the no-hitter in the seventh with a home run to left for his first home run of the season.

  • In the fifth a RBI double from Troy Cahill with two away gave UAFS a 2-0 lead and, with two out again in the sixth, a RBI single from Dylan Hurt gave the Lions a 3-0 lead.
  • After the home run by Loya for a 3-1 deficit and some momentum for the Buffs, a leadoff double down the line in the bottom of the seventh and a sacrifice bunt moved Anthony Seminaris to third as Cahill drove him home with his second hit of the game and a 4-1 lead.A double steal in the bottom of the eighth scored the fifth run.
