  • Records: West Texas A&M 11-2, Arkansas Fort Smith 7-4

  • Location: Fort Smith, Ark. (Crowder Field)

  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M baseball team battled back from an early 3-0 deficit for a 5-4 victory in ten innings in the rubber-match of a three-game series at Arkansas-Fort Smith Monday afternoon.  WT junior Braden Baker pitched outstanding in relief as he went the final three innings, allowing two hits, walked one and fanned five.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Buffs loaded the bases in the top of the first with nobody out, but were unable to score as the inning came to an end with a fielder's choice.
  • UAFS got a Troy Cahill RBI single through the left side with two out for a 1-0 lead.
  • Two errors by the Buffs in the second proved costly as Edward Ibarra scored on a throwing error off a passed ball for a 2-0 lead as the Buffs committed a total of three miscues in the frame.
  • The third run of the game for the Lions was helped out by the fourth WT miscue in the field as Dylan Hurt reached on an error to begin the inning and a sacrifice bunt scored him later for a 3-0 lead.
  • WT junior hurler Darin Cook got out of the jam without further damage as he fanned Cahill and Kyle Love to end the threat as the Lions left the bags full.
  • The Buffs began their comeback in the fifth as freshman Tommy Williams singled to right with one away as junior Justice Nakagawa belted a two run home run to left for a 3-2 deficit for his team-leading third home run of the season.
  • WT tied the game again with the long ball as junior Christian Loya belted his second home run of the season for a 3-3 score on a solo shot to left in the sixth.
  • UAFS answered right back in the bottom of the frame with two outs as Jace Pitchford singled to left for a 4-3 lead.
  • The Buffs wouldn't go away, however, as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but a fielder's choice out at home got the first out.Senior Luis Amaro hit a sacrifice fly to center plating the equalizer.
  • WT junior reliever Braden Baker got out of a huge jam in the eighth as the Lions had runners at the corners with one out as Baker came back with two big strikeouts to preserve the tie.
  • Both teams had a runner on in the ninth, but could not score sending the game to extra-innings.
  • In the tenth, Loya singled to begin the frame and senior Nick Canas put down a great bunt moving Loya to second.
  • Senior Brandon Marrero doubled down the right field line plating Loya for a 5-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Hurt doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Baker came up again with two strikeouts to end the game as UAFS left a runner stranded at third.
