Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: #14 West Texas A&M 3, Tarleton State 2

  • Records: West Texas A&M 12-2, Tarleton State 9-5

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)

  • The Lead: Behind 12 strikeouts from junior Joe Corbett, No. 14 West Texas A&M battled back from a pair of one run deficits for a 3-2 win in the series opener against Tarleton State Friday evening at Wilder Park for the eighth-straight home victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Corbett retired the first two batters of the game with his first of 12 K's, but Ruben Rodriguez had a different plan with a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 TSU lead.
  • The lead was short lived, however, as a walk to senior Bodie Bryan and single from senior Jimmy Cubillos put runners at the corners and senior Luis Amaro hit a sacrifice fly for a 1-1 score.
  • Corbett got into a jam in the third as the first two Texans reached base after getting plunked and a wild pitch moved them to second and third and a Francisco Rodriguez RBI single to right on a 3-2 count plated the second run of the game for the Texans.
  • The Buffs turned the first of two double plays in the game for two outs and Corbett came back with a strikeout to end the inning.
  • In the fifth, pinch-hitter senior Nelson Paredes doubled to right to begin the inning and a sacrifice bunt from Bryan moved Paredes to third.Cubillos hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-2 score.
  • The Buff "D" came up big behind Corbett once again in the sixth as a throwing error put R. Rodriguez at second with one out and a walk put two on base.Dylan Lemons then lined to left, but Rodriguez was caught napping at second on a great throw from Cubillos for the twin killing and ending the inning.
  • In the seventh, senior Brandon Marrero singled up the middle to begin the inning and a sacrifice bunt moved junior pinch-runner Blake Weaver to second.
  • After what looked like an extra-base hit down the left field line, but was called foul, Paredes stood strong in the box and drew a walk. The Texans went to the pen, replacing starter Evan Pontley for Connor Flanagan, who faced one batter and gave up a single to right by Bryan loading the bases.
  • Trent Stafford replaced Flanagan as Cubillos hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-2 WT lead and the first lead of the game for the Buffs.
  • In the eighth, junior Braden Baker replaced Corbett as he retired the first batter, but two walks followed and back-to-back K's got Baker out of the jam, including a 3-2 strikeout of Lemons leaving two stranded.
  • Junior Dominiic Yearego saw his first action in the ninth since earning a save the second game of the season against Adams State on Feb. 3.
  • Yearego calmly threw seven-straight strikes to begin the top of the ninth and struck out the side to end the game for his second save of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
