#5 Lady Buffs Host Cameron in the Lone Star Conference Opener

CANYON, Texas –
The #5 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M begin the defense of their Lone Star Conference Championship on Thursday night as they continue their homestand against the Cameron Aggies with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
CAMERON
Cameron is guided by third year head coach Emma Andrews who served as CU's top assistant for two seasons before taking over the program on May 11, 2016. Andrews played collegiately at Fresno State where he helped the Bulldogs to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
 
The Aggies enter the Lone Star Conference opener with an overall record of 2-4 following a home loss to Harding (87-73) on Saturday afternoon in Lawton. Cameron is 1-1 on the road this season with a win at Newman (80-74) in the season opener before falling at Southwestern Oklahoma State (98-79) on November 21st in Weatherford.
 
Maighan Hedge leads the way offensively for the Aggies as the freshman guard from Melbourne, Australia has gone 38-of-76 (50%) from the floor including 18-of-36 (50%) from behind the arc and 17-of-18 (94.4%) from the charity stripe to average 18.5 points per game. Lejha Smith has grabbed 46 total rebounds (13 offensive, 33 defensive) to average 7.7 per contest while also tallying eight blocks, five assists and five steals.
 
WT HEAD COACH KRISTEN MATTIO
Kristen Mattio is now in her fourth season as the head coach of the Lady Buffs, registering an overall record of 89-19 (.824) with three NCAA Tournament appearances including a spot in the Regional Finals each of the three seasons and a South Central Regional Championship in 2016-17. Mattio claimed Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year honors for the first time in her career last season as she led the Lady Buffs to the LSC Regular Season and Tournament Titles.
 
WINNING TRADITION
The 2017-18 season marked the sixth-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT has won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 27 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.

WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (NOV. 20)
The Lady Buffs jumped two spots to fifth in the newest edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top-25 announced on Tuesday afternoon by the association's offices in Lilburn, Georgia.
 
Ashland picked up 23 of the possible 24 first-place votes to jump to the top spot with 599 points followed by Union (562), Indiana, Pa. (531), Alaska-Anchorage (509), West Texas A&M (497), Bentley (459), Central Missouri (one first place, 451), Drury (445), Virginia Union (381) and Fort Hays State (379) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by WT (5th), Lubbock Christian (18th), St. Mary's (RV), Angelo State (RV) and Tarleton (RV).
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 207-30 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.3 percent. WT has averaged 1.077 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
BEST IN THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
The Lady Buffs have registered an overall record of 381-79 in Lone Star Conference action since joining the league prior to the 1986-87 campaign for a winning percentage of 82.8%. WT has won 16 LSC Regular Season Championships during that span including 14 Tournament Titles.
 
LADY BUFFS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Lady Buffs made their fifth straight and 24th overall appearance in the NCAA Division II Basketball Postseason in 2017-18 as they are 37-24 all-time in the NCAA Tournament with the 37 wins ranking sixth-most all-time in NCAA Division II and ranks fourth-most among active DII institutions. WT has claimed seven Regional Championships with two appearances in the National Finals since the 1986-87 campaign.
 
In the last five NCAA tournament appearances for WT, the Lady Buffs are 15-5 during the stretch with three South Central Regional Championships and an appearance in the 2014 Division II National Title Game.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The defending Lone Star Conference Champion Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M have been picked as the favorite in the league's preseason poll announced on Wednesday, October 24th during the annual LSC Basketball Online Media Day. The preseason poll is voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives from throughout the league.
 
The Lady Buffs picked up 18 of the possible 31 first place votes for a total of 324 points followed by Angelo State with seven first place votes for a total of 307 points. Tarleton ranked third (four first place, 279) followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (two first place, 252), Eastern New Mexico (199), Cameron (177), Texas Woman's (154), MSU Texas (140), UT Permian Basin (98), Texas A&M-Kingsville (74) and Western New Mexico (42). Marquita Daniels of Angelo State picked up Preseason Player of the Year accolades.
 
LAST TIME OUT
West Texas A&M senior Tyesha Taylor continued to dominate in the paint as the Temple product scored a career-high 25 points on Saturday afternoon as the #7 Lady Buffs remained unbeaten with a 91-70 victory over the visiting Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves in the finale of the Pak-A-Sak WT Thanksgiving Classic at the First United Bank Center.
 
West Texas A&M was led offensively by Tournament MVP Tyesha Taylor with a career-high 25 points as the senior went 12-of-16 from the floor including 1-of-3 from the free throw line followed by Lucy Burke with 17 and Deleyah Harris with 11 points, Taylor and Abby Spurgin grabbed six rebounds each while Reagan Haynes dished out nine assists.
 
Jenna Knafelc finished the game going 7-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-9 from behind the arc with 18 points followed by Sydni Williams with 13 and Khiya Adams with 11, Williams and JaNaiya Davis grabbed seven boards each.
 
WT finished the game going 36-of-64 (56.3%) from the floor including 8-of-17 (47.1%) from behind the arc and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the free throw line with 30 total rebounds (12 offensive, 18 defensive), 27 assists, 12 turnovers, eight steals and five blocks in the win.
 
The Pack went 27-of-63 (42.9%) from the field including 5-of-12 (41.7%) from deep and 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe with 30 rebounds (14 offensive, 16 defensive), nine assists, 18 turnovers, nine steals and a pair of bocks on the afternoon.
